To avoid taking smokie's thread off topic , i raise this here.
Yesterday i was awakened to booming music, Thai screams and assorted noises.
Fine, this is not a noise pollution blog.
Expressions of celebration.
Asked my son what it was all about ,
"Marriage,"
."Who?".
"You should know, you'r the eyes and ears,".
True, but i was baffled, no one i knew in the homes nearby was not married or of marriageable age. Or so i thought.
Soon found out.
Barely sixteen and no need to guess why a marriage was called for.
The kid i have known since she was 5 years old.
Let's be kind and say always plump, not a looker and with little personality.
Then i mused as i do.
There was an obvious correlation between the not so desirable girls around here getting their "husband" by natural procreation.
Then there are the personalities, they do not become accidentally pregnant.
My immediate neighbours daughter is a feisty girl/lady.Had numerous boyfriends (lovers) and a reputation to go with it.
We were friends , enjoyed a smoke and a laugh.
Then she found her mr right, they were together some time before she left home to live with his family. Result little Wim an adored grandchild. He stays with her parents (next door) daytime while she works. Husband and her collect Wim every evening.
A normal Thai family arrangement.
I could list countless local examples of " normal" developing relationships and of the other type, the forced marriages.
I remember the same in my youth.I know why i never had a child at sixteen and why the girls i dated would never have tried or wanted to ruin their life at such a young age.
It seems to be much more prevalent here though.
