Carrying on from a comment made about illiterates leaving school.
When was the last time you actually wrote a handwritten letter?
These days with auto type and abbreviations, computers smart phones I tabs etc etc, is handwriting a dying art form?
A Thai lady gave me a hand written note in English the other week, the writing was a thing of beauty, certainly puts my spider scrawl to shame.

I'm the same, my writing is atrocious and it's getting worse now, as the only writing I now do is meeting notes which are for my eyes only. I have the brains of a Jeremy Kyle guest but the handwriting of a doctor.

My handwriting is ugly, but legible. Best friend's, even i cannot read. Thank goodness for e mail. How he ever passed an exam is beyond me. I was pulled up at university for my scribbles, but more so for my usage.
Worst was later as a teacher, taking the greatest care when writing on a blackboard and it still looked abysmal.
Next lesson handwriting. Cringe.
I am not surprised that smart boards are the answer and assignments are sent by computer. Makes marking so much easier.

Probably because I put more effort into it my Thai handwriting is better than my English scribble. My wife's English is better than mine by miles but her Thai is terrible, we fight every time she writes something down for me. It looks like something a Doctor would write on microfilm prescription after a night on the grog.

Further thoughts. At ten years old we were required to use an osmiroid pen. My handwriting, although not beautiful , did become passable. The demise was the ubiquitous ball point pen.
Later i reverted back to a parker and that improved the handwriting.
I still have a parker and if required to write a hand written letter would use it.
Think i might have a go.

To be honest I think my downfall was the profession I entered, the guys were engineering geniuses, but their handwriting was terrible. So much so that everything had to be printed so others could read it, defect, corrective action etc etc worked carried out blah blah blah. Then we move on to acronyms, TBCO = To Be Carried Out, R2 aka R squared = removed and replaced. I was sat in Job Control one night with a fresh faced straight out of uni engineer type, jobs were coming in and the radio was going, nicknames were flying all over the place. He asked me, why dont you send an electrician to that job? Answer, Dragon has been sent already. Who or what is Dragon? Answer, its short for Dragon Slayer. WTF does that mean. Get on the p**s with him on a Fri night and you would understand. Next week my job was to make up a board with all the guys names their specialist trades and photos of them and their nicknames just so this guy could understand. Reminded of the scene from Kellys Heroes.

When I was young teachers tried to let me write right-handedly with a lead pencil. They gave up after a few days. Left-handed my writing has never shown much beauty. Don't write letters, but still scribble short (temporary) notes when at work. Anything else I key in.
