I noted a story from the Grenfell fire where a lady flooded her flat and reckoned that bought her the time to be rescued.
I'd have thought flooding the entire building from within would have been a good move.
Practical problems with that? would the water pressure have been maintained if every flat had opened it's taps full?
I'm pretty sure it would have been but I'm no plumber.

If I had have thought about this subject back when I was say, 12 years old, when Man had first landed on the moon, and wondered what it would be like 40-50 years into the future, I probably would have thought there would be no such thing as fires like this after the year 2000. That modern Man would have devised a way to not only prevent these fires, but if one did happen to start it would be extinguished quick smart.
Unless you lived in a cardboard box house on a refuse dump. And the cardboard was soaked in petrol. And you drank a lot and smoked in bed.

A 30 storey building without a water sprinkler system...one fire exit route and no proper early warning fire alarm system.
Yup sounds like nothing could go wrong.
Who carried out the building inspection then?
Let's see their face on TV explaining why it passed or their recommendations mothballed.
No wait....Boris already explained this.

If the hippity escape capsules were mandatory in not only highrises but planes also a lot more people would live.

I watched an interview with the leader of the Kensington Council where the subject of sprinklers was discussed. He claimed that whilst the cost to install sprinklers at the time of refurbishment was quite low at 200k, the residents didn't want them because of disruption during the installation process. So there you have it, we have safety laws and regs but they can be overridden by consumers who might not want to adhere to them, allegedly!

Grab a bic biro pen, fill the bath up and use it as a snorkel.
Similar to smoking a woodbine maybe

Faced with the choice of being boiled to death in a cast iron bath or covered in molten plastic from a melted plastic bath, I choose smoke inhalation and I'm not talking woodbines. Personally, I'd go for one of these: www.sosparachute.com/en/site/sosAt 24 floors, Floral Condo's in CM have a half way decent escape system. Each balcony has an offset escape hatch leading to the balcony below and each condo has a removable chain link ladder that fits the hatch, better than nothing I reckon.

Seen these as well, interia reel escape devices, but in the case of the London not sure how much help they would have been given the fire was on the outside of the building, it may have saved some Attachment Deleted

Right, I'm not getting it re the water pressure - I was under the impression that the pressure was sufficient to run a whole borough never mind a block of flats - so the idea of two hundred taps being opened at the same time cuts the pressure substantially seems a bit off?

I think perhaps you're confusing pressure and flow rate, pressure can remain consistent but flow rate decreases based on the number of outlets? To understand the difference you need to understand all there is to know about elevated head versus pressure head (!): kb.eng-software.com/display/ESKB/Relationship+Between+Pressure+Drop+and+Flow+Rate+in+a+Pipeline
