Expanding air traffic to the region could lead to lost travel opportunities for Thailand in the future as tourists fly directly to Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam (CLMV), say foreign tourism buyers at the Thailand Travel Mart Plus in Chiang Mai yesterday. Travel to the Mekong region is growing thanks to greater air access and interest among travellers in the rapidly developing area. Low-cost and full-service airlines from India, Singapore, Malaysia, the Middle East and China have commenced new routes and increased flights to regional destinations to meet growing market demand. Tourism analysts from the Mekong region said it is becoming a more attractive destination because of greater air access and improved water and land transport infrastructure. Authorities for the region are working together to define specific brand identities to promote travel to the region, with Cambodia leading in the area of heritage product management, Myanmar in local experiences, Laos in self-driving tours, Vietnam in luxury cruises and Thailand in lively metropolitan and food experiences. www.buriramtimes.com/thailand-faces-competition-tourists-neighbours/

Thailand's tourist areas are expensive by comparison with its competition.
The political and social situation doesn't help.
Vietnam is a better bet frankly....if I had gap year kids that's where I'd send them.
Far far safer and cleaner country.

I hate to agree with smokie on anything but in this case, as much as it pains me to do so, I have to say he is #cough right gasp #.
I spent four months there and fell in love with the place, has so much going for it.
Have no regrets about settling in Thailand but could have easily made Vietnam my home.

Are you up for one of them? I fancy Yangon

PP is a shithole, a haven for dirty old bastards who like wining and dining teenage boys.

I know of at least two tourists who told me the best thing that ever happened to them was the airport siege a few years ago, these werent zero dollar tourists, but ones who happily spent a few quid.
They have since moved onto pastures new, in this area, and tell me it was the best thing that ever happened to them, got them out a Thailand rut, a place they had been coming to for nearly 20 years.
