Unseen photos of Jimi Hendrix's greatest performances The Monterey International Pop Festival in June 1967 cemented rock 'n' roll as an art form to be reckoned with. It was also where a Seattle-born, 24-year-old guitarist named Jimi Hendrix would make his US debut and set the standard for what it meant to look -- and sound -- like a rock star. Donning a ruffled shirt, velour vest and bright red pants, with a scarf around his forehead, Hendrix commanded attention as he stepped on stage with the Fender Stratocaster that he would later douse in lighter fluid and set ablaze in one most iconic performances in rock history. As Hendrix's guitar went up in flames, 17-year-old Ed Caraeff, who was crouched on a chair at the front of the stage, snapped the shot that would later appear on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine not once, but twice. Hendrix was so impressed with the photos that he invited Caraeff to shoot his future gigs. edition.cnn.com/2017/06/21/arts/jimi-hendrix-ed-caraeff-burning-desire/index.html

Who would have guessed it facts: Hendrix served in the 101st Airborne and was a paratrooper before becoming a rock god. Jimmi had to come to the UK in order to play, back home in the US his music was too white for the black community and black music wasn't played by white music stations. In 1967, he and his newly formed band The Experience played working mens clubs in the north of England. In 1966 he jammed at the Regent Street Poly with Clapton because he didn't have a work permit to play on his own, Clapton walked off the stage half way through Jimmi's first number complaining, "you're too good man, I can't play with you". Four years after first arriving in the UK he was dead. A long but very good read about Jimmi. follows, interesting because it shows how highly he was regarded by his peers, right from day one. www.theguardian.com/music/2010/aug/08/jimi-hendrix-40th-anniversary-death One of the very best of that period, RIP Jimmi.
