Hip, that is the sort of crap I used to see on TVF every day. I have been living here for probably 10 years all up in the last 12 years, and I have never once been made to feel like I was not welcome. I have been made to feel like that back in Australia though and dread having to go back there these days. I'm glad you said that, I was getting worried that I was the only person who wasn't feeling unwelcome here, I was feeling left out and unloved on TVF because I wasn't feeling unwelcome - how's that for a complex. Took me a while to understand what you meant, had to trim back a few of the negatives. But seriously, I have never had any bad feelings with this country, have always felt welcome here. And I went through a divorce as well ! I think it has something to do with how you feel about a place as to whether or not you feel welcome there. Have met a lot of negative people here over the years and have told a few of them to do themselves a favour go bloody home. I wouldn't be too bothered with how the dross over at TVF made you feel, I felt mainly nausea !

Seriously, I also get sick and tired of people complaining that Thailand is or isn't this and that, it's what it is and it suits me perfectly well, complainers (bashers actually) are probably those folks who aren't happy anywhere, especially the place they've just come from.

How odd. I send letters to the US and UK monthly and always register them, I'm never asked for ID and never have been, must be a local thing. Nine out of ten of these requirements are never asked of me. I can remember over at TVF reading things like this and thinking "That's funny, I have been here for years and have done that same thing many times and have never been asked that" Have done countless border crossings and have never been asked to prove I had money on return. Have been asked for things a couple of times and just looked dumb and said "Mai mee" and they let it slide. My wife was getting the registration for our Isuzu changed from CR to CM years ago. My ex had forgotten to sign one of the many pages of document. Girl behind the counter said to my wife, rather than send it all the way back to CR and wait for it to return, "do you think you could copy her signature" ? FFS, that would never happen in Australia ! One of the things I love about this country. ทุกปัญหามีทางออก every problem has a solution.

You all seem to have missed the point. The post office in question was previously staffed by people i knew. I was big boss in that place. Still recognised as such by most. Ten baht stamp. Idiot did not know two five baht stamps, phoned to ask. What the hell? We have them in the UK as well, know as, box tickers, jobsworths, compliance officers. usual excuse is, "way above my pay grade" Usually they weigh my documents, then give me a price.

Not mentioned, who or what you are married to, aka the company you keep, not mentioned, the way you act dress and behave. Thankfully I aint married to a "mia farang" Not mentioned, Little Miss HiSo is barely aben to speak Engerlish so its easier for her to save face and spin you a line about, mai mee, not hab cannot do. I was in the TOT office in Bang Kapi a few years back, Little Miss HiSo in her "ferk me" shoes, Daisy Duke shorts and boob tube was trying to tell the farang catch of the day, cannot do, the farang was going higher and higher, little did either of them know, there are least three women in the office who speak perfect english, all who would have been willing to help him. Her attitude coupled with his, just p**sed them off. The dumb farang couldnt understand his walking dictionary lacked the english skills to translate for him, so it was easier for her to BS him and say cannot do. Same buffalo farang is probably to be found online bad mouthing Thais and Thailand.

When someone says "this is a nice country, but not like mine" you just know he should go home

I've read loads of posts over at that other place from people who say they can't trust the Post Office, mail goes missing etc. FWIW I rate the Thai postal service right up there with the Revenue Department, super super helpful and never one single problem of any kind. Having said that I can believe there are rogue posties everywhere who redirect mail for their own use, why even the UK has such folks.
But moving on.....my top ten list of things in Thailand I see others complain about, not in priority order:
The sidewalks in Bangkok are uneven and unsafe. The BIB always stop me a fine me and that's unfair. Street food is unclean and unsafe, I'd never eat it. I get charged more than others, I always have to pay the farang price for everything. The beaches are all really dirty. The banks in Thailand are unsafe, I'd never keep more than small amounts in them. She and her family ripped me off, took the house and car I bought for her. I have to renew my visa every year AND I have to report every 90 days. The ATM charges on foreign transactions are a rip off. Doctors and hospitals here are only in it for the money, their charges are ridiculous and they're not trained. In a road traffic accident, the farang is always at fault. The Thai Baht is artificially high and is supported by the elite for their own purposes.
I'm sure I've missed some so feel free. To be honest you could write a chapter about each point since there's an element of truth in some of them whereas others are complete nonsense and the fault of the complainer - you'd never be able to make them understand that however. In short, people who complain about those things haven't done their homework, haven't been here long enough to understand their environment and are almost certainly scared of being where they are - they are outside of their comfort zones hence everything is the fault of somebody or something else. fault.

The Thai Post Office jerked me around one time when I sent an order of mango wood products to a stingy lady in England who wanted it sent "cheap". The order never arrived and after harassing the boss at CM PO for ages he said - "We checked on the computer, we know it left Thailand" (meaning we did our job, they have lost it at the other end) I said - "I paid you all the money to get it there, I didn't give you half and the Poms the other half. If I just wanted it to leave Thailand I would have driven to the Myanmar border and tossed it over the bloody fence" !

I would suspect the vast majority of those whines come from people who for all intents and purposes are "trapped" in Thailand, threw their lot in with some slapper and are very unhappy with their current lot in life, further would suggest many have never lived in country other than their own before shacking up with said slapper in Thailand As i challanged so many times to people on the dark side, and was suspended for my troubles on many ocassions, if one is so unhappy in the enviroment one is in, then change your enviroment, if i was so unhappy and felt so oppressed in Thailand i would gave left a long time ago....unlike the vast majority of Thais, the whinging westerner has a choice, he can always go somewhere else

A warning
I’ve used the Thai postal service for years and have never had any problem with them. However I’ll only send greeting cards (Christmas/birthday/thank you). Once I did send some application forms out to the US via Thai post tracking. Everything went well.
BUT,…I will not use the Thai postal service to send sensitive documents. I use FedEx.
The warning,....
The girlfriend knows someone who worked (high position) at a large Thai postal facility in Bangkok (maybe 20 years +). That person resigned recently because they were requested to do things with the mail that is not permitted. This had been going on for years and the individual did note it, even wrote to others about it (sending the information to close friends only).

It would be funny if it turned out some of those complainers were just trolls (mods) stirring up the morons who did everything wrong and now blame Thailand for their problems. I heartily agree with what rgs and SP said about the whiners and why they are like that. Most of them would have been miserable prix back 'ome as well. They just brought their misery here with them. Eff em I say ! I'm happy here ! (I do believe the main reason I am so happy here is the lady I ended up with, having a lady who is a good, responsible wife and Mother is a big thing here. She despises the "Hello Kitty" set)
