The hotel I'm in told me that they are at their lowest ever occupancy.
I've been offered an executive condo for 1/3rd of the regular price in another place cos of low numbers.
This bodes I'll for high season, this season could be carnage as sharpnooerators try to make up for losses in the way the article describes.

I find a lot of that article inaccurate and in parts accurate, on too many levels to discuss.

I heard an Australian guy say tonight his first visit to Thailand was '83 to Samui.
"Not going back, ruined."
Then he listed five other Thai locations he'll never go back to. And he was right with every one.
Phuket, Pattaya, Sukhumvit, Koh Chang, Koh Tao.

The main problems for Thailand are the exchange rate and the growing tourist trades in the region having either better infrastructure or vastly cheaper pricing.
I'd far rather visit the safe and well run Vietnam than the chaotic mess that is Thailand any day if I was new to the region.

I think it was the hoarded of the last five years that wrecked it. That last time we were in Samui the roads were a disgrace. By the way, the Aussie is a married man, not a expat.

I find a lot of that article inaccurate and in parts accurate, on too many levels to discuss. I agree with the Spanish aspect. I witnessed the police arresting people on trumped up charges to extract "fines." I witnessed unfair deportations. I witnessed sexual assaults against British girls ( of course I intervened ). I witnessed the level of street harassment by timeshare touts - a disgrace. I remember being told not to visit in September cos by then the locals were sick of tourists and the abuse level soared. And we have all seen the reports of illegal properties being seized and bulldozed cos of corruption. Called that right, so he did.

Sexpat aspect - 1600 baht bar fine, girl 4,000 baht at Soi Cowboy last week. And no, I didn't take her. I was just there researching for a book. That's my story and I'm sticking with it

To be brutally honest if I didn't have to go back to Thailand to visit family I likely wouldn't go. Laos sounds nice , and it's much cheaper.

Hate to mention this, but I think I read exactly the same comments on TVF, ten years ago. (I think there will always be a tourist industry here, but if anything kills it, it will be greed. An electrical engineer I worked with in Australia told me nearly 10 years ago he and his wife would not be going back to Phuket as it has become just as expensive as having a holiday back 'ome)

The only place I liked in Laos was Luang Prabang, went there twice and loved it. First time did the two day slow boat trip there from Chiang Khong. A lot of people would die of boredom there after the second day but I loved it, good, cheap food and guesthouses, photographer's heaven, and a silk and cotton weaving village not far out of town to visit. The people were very polite and I don't think I got hassled once.
