To be brutally honest if I didn't have to go back to Thailand to visit family I likely wouldn't go. Laos sounds nice , and it's much cheaper. The only place I liked in Laos was Luang Prabang, went there twice and loved it. First time did the two day slow boat trip there from Chiang Khong. A lot of people would die of boredom there after the second day but I loved it, good, cheap food and guesthouses, photographer's heaven, and a silk and cotton weaving village not far out of town to visit. The people were very polite and I don't think I got hassled once. Great fun watching my gf feeding the monks. I think its the only time she has ever gotten up before 6am .

My missus is up before 6.00am every morning but I can't remember the last time she fed the monks, and I hear their bells every morning when they walk past our house. I used to feed them, until that day I was standing in front of the Potala Palace in Lhasa taking photos, and a monk walked up beside me admiring the view. I thought look at this poor bugger, he's got fa but he looks happy enough. Then he put his hand inside his robes and produced this bloody big smart phone, looked like it set you back about 25k at Pantip. Much better than the phone I was using. Started taking photos with this massive thing that probably had more megapixels than my digital camera.

The main problems for Thailand are the exchange rate and the growing tourist trades in the region having either better infrastructure or vastly cheaper pricing. I'd far rather visit the safe and well run Vietnam than the chaotic mess that is Thailand any day if I was new to the region. I had friends fly over to Phuket, last year, they were under the impression, Thailand/Phuket = cheap holiday....oh how wrong they were, they didnt realise how expensive it was

My first trip to Thailand was early eighties. Farang were a mystery, not a commodity.

I find some of them still are, a mystery that is. Have you tried reading any of buhi or smokie's posts lately ?

As I posted elsewhere, I've spent £8,500 in Thailand since June 2nd. It's been wild as I've had family here. 365,000 baht.
In December 2015 365,000 baht would have cost me £6,700.
£1,800 gone missing in eighteen months due to the exchange rate.

I suppose the exchange rate has a lot to do with the tourist numbers for any country, the lower the rate the less people can afford that holiday.
