There was an unimaginative goody-goody-two-shoes atmosphere that permeated the site from the top down and was pettily enforced. Teachers in the worst connotation of the word. Shame...I enjoy the odd caning.

I accept joko's point about forums failing. We're only three of four active members away from success - the rearrival of Chiang Mai is very welcome - more of his quality would be fabulous. What sets us apart - and maybe holds us back - is that we collectively have an incredible depth of experience and knowledge of Thailand. Genuine newbies would maybe feel overwhelmed. In saying that - I reckon I could draw several newbies to the forum, especially later this year when my new books are released. The problem is - some of our illustrious members would look upon them as chum in the water. And we'd lose them as fast as we gained them. How does one discern the difference between a new members post and a "Tony's been on the Jamesons and Thai sticks again post" ?

The particular Middle East method is called falaka or falanga,[1] derived from the Greek term phalanx. The German term is Bastonade, deriving from the Italian noun bastonata (stroke with the use of a stick). In former times it was also referred to as Sohlenstreich (corr. striking the soles). The Chinese term is da jiao xin." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foot_whipping

I am anything but "an illustrious" member, but I don't treat new members as chum in the water (not even sure if I know what that means) if it means attacking them because they are new. Too busy dealing with brain dead rednecks to have time for new members ! And what does Tony do with the Thai sticks ? Throw them at dogs like I do ?

Well here is the self written obituary of Thailand Teaching Forum, hardly a great eulogy is it.
Well perhaps if one views the comment concerning income therein lies the answer. Couldn't make a profit so what could have been a good social site was killed by the desire for income.
