A bit more than a year ago, the Ajarn Forum infamously shut down. No warning. No consultation with the unpaid moderators. Just belly up, all of a sudden like. A couple days ago, an offshoot of the AF did the same. The Thailand Teaching forum is no more. When the AF closed, I looked for a new home to post my infrequent, self-promoting posts. I looked at Teak Door (too rude and angry). I looked at the TTF. Ultimately, I decided to call the Big Mango my forum of choice, primarily because the TTF just didn't get a lot of traffic. One year later, they've shut down. Now, there are no more online forums devoted to teaching in Thailand. Are forums a thing of the past? Are they being replaced by social media and Facebook groups? How many active new members has this place got in the last couple years? Will the Big Mango go the way of the AF and the Thailand Teaching Forum and just shut down one day out of the blue?

joko, you can post on here til the cows come home, you are a well loved contributor, I envy you and your epic motocy journeys.
The Mange will NEVER go the way of the names you mentioned, for one simple reason, this place aint about money or profit. There are some things money cant buy.

Who knows? Too early to tell as it only exists slightly more than two years And that simple fact has p**sed off more than a few people. A place for fellow travelers and kindred spirits to meet and post nonsense. See post above, its nothing to do with money.

Who knows? Too early to tell as it only exists slightly more than two years Okay then, how many new active members has this place got in the last 6 months? Some say the forum medium is dying. This way of communicating is going the way of the chatroom and BBS, both of which's demise I lament.

I concur, faceache and fakebook are where its at these days, how sad never mind.

I think forums collectively have a shelf life, thanks to a handful of turds that can't help going out of their way to make them as miserable as they possibly can. The idea is to have fun at no-ones expense and don't take them too seriously. As previously mentioned, some forums are about generating clicks or they have only one agenda (ie teaching only) that gets bashed to death. Diversity is the key.

You won't see this totally useless clip on any other Thailand forum.

This forum may survive because it is like a group of people at a regular pub. Same people every night but sometimes a new one so the old jokes and war [or who're] tales can be told again.
Come to think of it in most places pubs are closing too.

Thailand Teaching Forum is no more. Good riddance. If Ajarn Forum was a rollicking pot of deregulation and laissez-fair, Thailand Teaching forum was its straight-laced, prudish, narrow-minded, and tunnel-visioned sibling. Boring as all hell. And though virtually all the membership was male, the atmosphere was always more like a sorority than a forum. There was no quicker way to get banned than to log in without wearing lipstick.

I accept joko's point about forums failing.
We're only three of four active members away from success - the rearrival of Chiang Mai is very welcome - more of his quality would be fabulous.
What sets us apart - and maybe holds us back - is that we collectively have an incredible depth of experience and knowledge of Thailand. Genuine newbies would maybe feel overwhelmed.
In saying that - I reckon I could draw several newbies to the forum, especially later this year when my new books are released.
The problem is - some of our illustrious members would look upon them as chum in the water. And we'd lose them as fast as we gained them.

There is another popular Thailand forum that seems to have a continuous stream of new members who seem quite content to belittle each other at every opportunity. "New" members, in inverted commas.

On this forum there are numerous members who would happily take it over and run it with no thought towards profit so it will be going nowhere. As to it growing larger its not something we actively aspire to. Nor do we refuse to...join or don't...up to you.
