I’m not really an old hand, the first time that I got down to Pattaya was in 1997, some of you were there well before me. Pattaya back in 97 was a really quiet place in the daytime, walking street was totally dead until midday. The nightlife was great but picking up a brass that didn’t go starfish could be very hit & miss (unless you were willing to do your shopping in Marylyn-A Gogo). Quite a few of the girls wouldn’t even go down (I didn’t find Soi 6 until 98). Nevertheless, Pattaya was a great place back then, locals treated farangs well, traffic was minimal and scams were virtually unheard of, with the exception of the girls e-mailing their loved ones for ‘sick Buffalo’ money in the internet cafes (which were everywhere at that time). Another great thing was that everything was so bloody cheap. The first time that I went I was getting 3 Baht to 1 HK Dollar but by the second time (just one month later) the Baht had completely crashed and I was getting 7 Baht to 1 HK Dollar. Dinner during that trip was lobster (at the Lobster Pot) and Champers every night. The sea around Koh Larn was clear and the island almost deserted, this was before the Chinese/Japanese tour groups took over. The Sugar Shack (on Soi 13/3) would arrange a weekly Island trip complete with a massive ice chest full of ice and beer. A day trip to the Island, which covered the fares for me and one brass and all the drink we could guzzle was only 500 Baht. Every excuse that I could invent was used to get me down to Pattaya around that time. However, Pattaya was a very different animal back then and too much has changed for the worse. Now I find myself having to make excuses not to go there whenever I’m invited or if a customer wants me to go down there with him and show him around. Pattaya for me is firmly in my past and I do not have any intentions of adding new memories there. Good review. Back then it was a fun place. Forget the sex bit, just down and dirty fun. Plus an honesty missing in much of Thailand now. Hiring motorcycles, even buying them on condition of return.Yes, buy up front and a guarantee of buy back. Yes did and returned bike 6 months later, price agreed . Bars in the day time were fun, real fun. No intent of getting you into bed. Playing stupid games and banter. A very different place. Hiring motorcyclesThat was a must, a big bike and a bag of freedom. Very little traffic (or even tourists) back then, so the bikes were a great way to get around. Bars in the day time were funJust chillin and watching the world go by while losing another drinks bet on connect 4. You could even play a full game of pool on the rickety old tables that were in the bar areas without having some prick tapping you on the shoulder to sell you a copy Rolex.

I make no pretense, i met my wife there. We hit it off. Why i have no answer I went to her place. No bed, nothing but a buddha shrine. She had run away from her husband and family. The bright lights beckoned. I stayed there, but bought a bed and stereo. A room, a memory.

Pattaya and Jomtien are places I actually enjoy visiting- the shame! Jomtien for the food, decent hotels and passable beach. Chilling at Rabbit Resort with beers in the arvo is a pleasant way to spend an afternoon. Simple Simons for a recovery Full English. Spent New Years with close friends in Pattaya for the last few years and it was always a blast. Now if I were to be felched by the BBQ on a darky and dingy baht bus I might have another opinion. Heck, the crush injuries may prove fatal.

I've been offered free accommodation in the Dark Side this winter. I don't know anything about that area?

The Duck is also a resident I believe? Almost half expect a hand delivered warning to be slipped under my hotel door. I've decided where to stay- I'm sure TVF would love a review drunkenduckguesthouse.com/

I've been offered free accommodation in the Dark Side this winter. I don't know anything about that area? The Dark Side is the other side of Suk Rd, funnily enough, although it gets slagged off, its actually very similar to the way Pattaya was 20+ years ago. Off course the 2 week millionaires and mongers dont know that, hence why they slag it off.

By the way - due to my visitors I've spent more time than I like in various sex zones these past few weeks. Plus I was in Pattaya last year. Pattaya - woeful, crude and embarrassing. Chiang Mai - full of craggy hill tribe likes and Isaan girls that can't get a job in Bangkok Hua Hin - hilarious they think anyone would pay them for sex Nana - home of the Isaan dwarfs - the flattened face brigade Cowboy - some serious quality in Cowboy - but coyote pricesLuckily I'm a good boy and always go home to Skype my lady - tempted, I am not. Plus if The Hurricane found out I'm a dead man. Cowboy, , the only reason they are there is coz they are too ugly to be employed on Ratchada, coyote prices, , wrong again, farang buffalo prices, and best of luck to these girls for charging them, if the farangs are that dumb or desperate hell mend them. In Bkk there are two types of knocking shops, one for the Somchais, the prices you wouldnt believe, the other places are the type of places guys walk in wearing suits and park their European cars outside, the girls in there are stunners, I mean stunners, not only are they stunners they behave in a lady like manner, not like the wailing banshees found in lower suk, home made tatts, beer guts, birth stretch marks, cellulite and a serious attitude problem.

When I was younger, and single, I used to say things like - "due to my bullshit libido I've spent more time than I like in various sex zones these past few weeks"

PattayaLand 1+2 were where the action was at. Two things stand out for me, the arrival of the farang time share touts, and the closing of the best bar in Pattaya, The Anzac Hotel in 1999. As mentioned above, the service was way different back then, I was in Pattaya a couple of years ago, an open air bar, no ashtrays on the counter, a customer stubbed his cigarette out on the floor, some 40 year old granny gave him shit. Next thing, 10 guys said, check bin, check bin.........., between them these guys would have pumped about 10k into the bar that night, and the following night and the night after. The attitude was eff you by the mamasan, bet you aint so gobby now you cow, hope you are back breaking your back in the rice fields, heres a tip for you, dont bite the hand that feeds.

Not mentioned above, back in 1994, the older timers were telling me, this place is shyt now, you should have been here 20 years ago.
Whether its true or not is irrelevant, everyday they next batch of farang buffalo arrive and think its the greatest place on earth.
