When i was fifteen, my friend , sixteen, offered me a lift to the bus stop. He was a learner driver and not permitted to carry a pillion passenger on a provisional license. I , at fifteen was not allowed a provisional license. Helmets were compulsory. I did not have one on. L plates likewise and he did have them. Police patrol car, other direction. Shit, i jumped off fast. Did not know what happened next. Did later when i got home, police enjoying a cup of tea with my parents. A month later , magistrates court. We were both fined 5 pounds, big money then and license endorsed. But i did not have a license. When i did it was endorsed as soon as issued. .......identical same thing in my case except the police booked us on the spot and I had to walk home! I lived on the edge of my seat waiting for the post to be delivered each day until finally that offending brown envelope arrived, addressed to me, "we" were not amused. So we should have been killed? I doubt sirpolee agrees.

I've spent some time in police stations in my life:
On Regents Street just short of Pickers in '69, two plain clothes spotted my girl swallow a tylenol equivalent and a bus load of aggressive uniformed rained down - three hours in West End Central.
In '73 in San Diego a state cop stopped me because I was driving a van and had long hair, he found a bag of earl grey in the back, two hours in the station whilst the "substance" was checked and the van searched thoroughly.
In '79 in Detroit I'd spent all night at my new place of work nursing a sick payroll system, on the way home at 7am I went through a red along side a school bus. Two miles on, a cop stood in the middle of the street waved me down, I was handcuffed and put in the squad car in front of a restaurant where my boss of two months was eating breakfast. Five hours in the cells whilst my background was checked, bailed for sixty bucks with court in the AM. In court I was fined sixty bucks and went to work, on arrival the receptionist said, "the boss wants to see you".
But my rap sheet is clean although it probably shouldn't be!

You must have some cracker stories about those days. I grew up in Australia glued to the tv set loving the 80s American shows set in those times. Great stuff!

I recall that law but being a year or two older than you bowie I or we could ride any CC of bike and with L plates too. Beasts of my choice were a 250 Ariel Arrow followed by a 650 bonny. Wonder I survived looking back in time. Parents birthday present to me at 17 was an A35 van , great beast when you got a mattress in the back and your No.1 uniform on (and later off) when pulling naval port totty and wrens!!!
The police indeed .
Local police knew everyone and a bloody good old fashioned policing system the village and beat bobby system was too, a few clips of the ear or a cup of tea and a chat to ones parents kept many of us on the straight and narrow. The advent of ''Panda Cars'' did more harm than good in my view.
Mind you at the time I was a young serving naval officer, plodmanship came later upon my completion of a short service naval commission.
Accelerated promotion programme 2 years in length due to education and naval experience and into S B due to naval work. Lieutenant Commander to Constable in two years.
