I've spent some time in police stations in my life: On Regents Street just short of Pickers in '69, two plain clothes spotted my girl swallow a tylenol equivalent and a bus load of aggressive uniformed rained down - three hours in West End Central. In '73 in San Diego a state cop stopped me because I was driving a van and had long hair, he found a bag of earl grey in the back, two hours in the station whilst the "substance" was checked and the van searched thoroughly. In '79 in Detroit I'd spent all night at my new place of work nursing a sick payroll system, on the way home at 7am I went through a red along side a school bus. Two miles on, a cop stood in the middle of the street waved me down, I was handcuffed and put in the squad car in front of a restaurant where my boss of two months was eating breakfast. Five hours in the cells whilst my background was checked, bailed for sixty bucks with court in the AM. In court I was fined sixty bucks and went to work, on arrival the receptionist said, "the boss wants to see you". But my rap sheet is clean although it probably shouldn't be! 1979 in Detroit. You must have some cracker stories about those days. I grew up in Australia glued to the tv set loving the 80s American shows set in those times. Great stuff! Indeed I do. But 1970 in Detroit was even more interesting, three years after the Detroit riots. We rented a duplex on Coplin at Warren on the East side, three blocks from the projects (black ghetto) and five blocks from the Conner and Warren Precinct station, a police station built to withstand an invasion. The projects were run down two story government built tenements, most had broken windows and few had curtains, some had sheets tacked up - everyone had a brand new Caddie, Le Sabre or Lincoln parked outside and on Saturday nights "leroy" would get dressed to the nines and go cruisn" downtown. We'd sit on the porch and roll our own and watch whilst the police helo. scanned the streets nearby with his high beam, gunfire at night was very common and part of the everyday scene - ah yes, the good old days! But the TV was good, or so we thought, The Jeffersons, Archie Bunker in All in the Family, Sanford and Son, Kojak and many more, brilliant stuff for it's day and much copied in later years. Last story: in 1978 my career had progressed and I was a VP for a bank in the IT department, the computer suite and my office was in the sub basement of the then Penobscot Building downtown, a turn of the century sky scraper that was very grand with marble walls and wonderful ceilings, the sub basement was three floors underground and underneath the bank vault! I had about 50 staff in my department, being downtown we drew mostly on an inner city labour market, 18 black women, five white males, twenty six black males and one white woman. The black guys were always getting up to all kind of tricks, games and nonsense but were all mostly a good bunch, most had come from Alabama and the deep south following the money trail to the industrial North. The only serious problem I ever had with staff was a law suit for discrimination by somebody who didn't get a much wanted promotion, it cost us US 40k to settle, it was filed by the single white female....go figure as they say.

Hmm!! Upon reflection what was intended to be a short bio does come across as somewhat pompous in its final short paragraph. Wasn't meant to be like that though. All rather ''Beano'' and Lord Snooty in fact!!

I laughed at him and said i had these. He snatched them. "Please remove all plastic bags; i am hiding one,".

Not so, everyone has led different lives and followed different paths, it's learning about those differences that makes exchanges such as this highly interesting.
