"During both trials, his defence was supported by character testimonies from other prominent people in Sydney, including the Mayor of Waverley. The trial of Lazarus goes to the heart of rape culture in Australia. As is often argued in circumstances like this, Lazarus was described as a "nice guy" who respected women and had "lots of female friends".
It's like in Thailand with the Red Bull killer and in the USA with Pres. Trump calling his son 'a good boy'.

Can she pursue a civil case against him? That has happened in Scotland in the recent past, resulting in a prominent footballer having to pay damages to the victim.

Goodwillie (hardly an appropriate name) and Robertson. The difference, however, was that the authorities had refused to prosecute the case, hence the private prosecution. In the case of the Australian gentleman (and I use the term loosely), he's already been found legally "not guilty".

The Aussie cops are good at finding someone and then pinning a crime onto them which isn't too hard, ie an unroadworthy car or jaywalking... But they seem totally useless at solving an actual crime such as a car theft or a home invasion. I believe it is called "proactive" or something like that.
