Delayed gratification, or deferred gratification, is the ability to resist the temptation for an immediate reward and wait for a later reward. Generally, delayed gratification is associated with resisting a smaller but more immediate reward in order to receive a larger or more enduring reward later.
This has cropped up in several threads here.
The saving up for things, of searching for things.
The hours of pleasure i spent in second hand book shops and record shops.
Worked when i was at school; paper round in the morning and weekends at local garage (filling station, car repair place). Doing my homework at the garage and getting very p**sed off if i was writing and some stupid bastard actually wanted me to fill up their car with petrol.
Now, all f ing phones and computers.
Want it now. Then of course all becomes banal, valueless.
I am guilty too, as stated, downloading music at will.
Finding texts, poems etc by a quick search.
BUT, how did i know that stuff in the first place?
Did i leave school at sixteen to make a pittance?
Did i live in virtual poverty for years to study?
Yes i did.
Libraries, not the internet
I know i am old and of not of this age and furthermore in Thailand.
I was in Seacon the other day as son had f ed up his (my) computer.
Got it cleaned and sorted.
One day later f cked again.
Why?He down loaded some idiotic game. One I had deleted.
Sure he thought he knew best and old fuddy duddy did not know.
Little trip today to the same computer repair shop, my friend.
"Here he is, please explain to him,".
Oh dear, poor son, very vast loss of face.
The "friend" explained in terms son could understand and we went for a meal.
Returned to the computer "friend" later.
"All sorted,".
Then explained in detail to son.
"Many thanks, how much?".
"Nothing, you paid the other day,".
