I am a massive fan of travel by rail, it's just so much more civilized than air travel. Currently saving every baht spare for the third round of interailing next April. This was taken on the way to Budapest; all the franchises in Britain could learn many a lesson from the German rail system.

From a very early age, I have always enjoyed trains. When I was young some of us kids would hop the Florida East Coast Railway trains just so we could travel over the trestle and then walk back to do it again. While on the train we would scavenge for flares and boom caps (used to warn the engineer that there was work up ahead). And nowadays every major trip we plan we try to include a train ride. While in Italy, we traveled to the three major cities we visited by train. I enjoyed the speed. When we traveled to Lhasa in Tibet, it was by train over the Tibetan Plateau. If any of you ever decide to do this trip by train with a spouse, purchase all four seats in the berth and only do the North South trip.

When visiting Japan we traveled by train between Kyoto and Tokyo on the Shinkansen bullet train. For our next big holiday we’ll be traveling to Machu Picchu by train (from Cusco): www.belmond.com/hiram-bingham-train/hiram_bingham_train
From the longer rides, Beijing – Lhasa/Hong Kong - Beijing to the short quick rides as Shanghai’s Maglev, trains are a nice way to travel. One day with luck they will build a faster (or at least a little more comfortable) line from Khon Kaen to Bangkok. That’ll be so much nicer than the drive.

I'd love to do the Orient Express, pricey though. Bullet trains around mainland China are the way to go but almost the same price as a plane ticket.

I could get the luxury and service a lot better in a fixed hotel of high quality more comfortably. Trains are great. I travelled 6 Months almost every night on Indian Railways and in first class had a very enjoyable time, sometimes an even more enjoyable time if I travelled in 2nd. The view through a train window is a special view not replicated elsewhere. A good book and we have paradise, possibly improved by a full walkman of music. The accident rate of trains in China though not perfect is I think safer than some of the Chinese airlines.

Next planned train trip 2017. Trans – Siberian A couple we know in the states asked us to join them. We told them we couldn’t do it during 2016 because our schedule is already full. I don’t think much of Russia and 15 days might be too long. But it should be an interesting trip. www.goldeneagleluxurytrains.com/trains/golden-eagle/

I'll be heading on that trip at that time, doing my Scotland to Singapore journey.

I remember the champagne and five course meals on the London to Edinburgh route.
Now they give you a sandwich/crisps and a can of IPA.
How times have changed!

I travelled in India on a 6 month FirstClass railpass. Real cheap charlie. Spent most nights on the train. Did things like Delhi to Calcutta then a day in Calcutta and off to Bombay at 10pm. 6 months only one train was cancelled and only 4 arrived more than halff an hour late at their destination and none more than 2 hrs. Beat that Virgin.

Below is the 2017 schedule for the train traveling west (to Moscow). If the schedule is similar in 2018 as it will be in 2017 it might work out alright (end of spring). Might miss the first few days.
