They now charge extra if you want a certain seat. We needed a bulkhead seat to put the bassinet for the baby , and the cheeky shites wanted more money , and that's per leg of the journey. So total 4 planes going over and back equals about an extra 200 per person.
So in the end we've paid that for the wife and son , but the rest of us traveling have said no not paying. It's ridiculous.
Now I get bulkhead seats should be reserved for babies , but asking for a window seat or your favourite seat then getting charged for it is bs imo.
According to the travel agent all airlines are starting to di this but it's Malaysia first.

At one time they were a decent airline, but gone rapidly gone down hill, a few years back they had some excellent business class deals to Cape Town, not long after the one that went missing and the one that was shot down over Russia.. but Mrs S didnt like my logic which i stated statisically speaking they had no chance of getting lost and crashing into the ocean or getting shot down by the Russians again So we didnt fly them because she had spoken

We always refused the bulkhead seats with the bassinet even for the same price. Personally I prefered to nurse the little lad on my lap in a blanket. The personal touch.

The only way around this is to have status with the airline.
They are all at it now unfortunately Hipster!
Be aware that Malaysian are a OW alliance partner so if you have Qantas or BA membership you can claim points for redemption flights....get everyone on a family plan and you can share points between members.
Just a way of clawing back those dollars.

The thing I do not like is the practice of breaking up family or groups and seating them indivilually all over the aircraft even if they booked together. There are very rare cases this must happen but it should not be regular practice.

There are very rare cases this must happen but it should not be regular practice. We had a flight once where I had to sit back 4 rows away from my family because some lady managed to get the bulkhead seat next to my wife and very young daughter. I was a bit annoyed we were separated and asked the air hostess if she can ask her to move so I can sit with my family. She said no so I went up with the hostess and asked her again. Still she said no. Then I said this is crazy seperating families , my wife will need help and I'm down there. The air hostess said the flights full but then offered the lady a free upgrade to business. The lady jumps up. Sure she says , big smile on her face. I thought no eff you. I said to the hostess no don't di that , I'll stay where I am and when my daughter starts screaming don't say I didn't offer.

One of many flights between Bkk and Aust with a baby. One occasion he just wouldn't settle. It was embarrassing. Feed, nurse, play, nurse.... nope nothing worked. Rather large tattooed chap next to us said "Do you mind if I have a go at settling him?". We offloaded him quicker than a somchai at a wedding. Next thing the air hostess comes running down the aisle "A stranger has your baby!". We are like "we are in a tube at 35000 feet. Where the hell are they going to go?". Next thing he returns, baby out like a light asleep. Apparently the large tattooed gent has a great gravelly voice for nursery rhymes.

If you have any issues I suggest asking on the Qantas board of flyertalk.
