Many do the usual suspect locations for foreigners seem to be getting overrun by tourists - and Chinese tourists seem to be making areas once blissful a pain in the *ss now.
I'm planning on visiting Trat in December as I reckon ( as told by pals ) it still holds some of it's original charm.
As a long term stay/retirement location - I like Phitsanulok. It's big enough to have when you need, small enough to still be a Thai town at heart. Having the airport there as well is handy.
Where do you think is up and coming?

I live near Wichianburi,in Petchabun province,it is pretty rural there, but attractive countryside, with it's valleys, and hills and mountains, the only drawback is the heat, march through to end of may, many expats live around that area, though that may say more about the wives, from said area former employment history,if i can put it delicately than any real plan to actively live in that area.

Well as one who wasnt dragged by the buffalo nose ring to some bumferk village in the back of Nakorn Nowhere, I actually quite like it up that way, just down the road from you is a poster who lives in Ban Pu Toei, I could easily see myself living there. Would it be my first choice, no, but would easily be in my top 10 places. To the NW of Kan, very nice, Loei, very nice, Nakon Nayok very nice. My only ploblem is getting my Bkk mrs to move to Chan, we are half way there already, her work holds us back from moving full time. PS, its not just Petchabun thats roasting, try Bkk, thank gawd for Mistsubishi a/c units. PPS, be thankful you are where you are, you want to see where some of these farang suckers end up, usually on the HW #24.

Agree, rgs, all in all it s a pretty nice area, the village i live in is pretty good, and we are on the edge,so have a nice veiw over the ricefeilds to the mountains,as you say i have seen a lot of parts of the country, where i would not want to live,so yes i do feel lucky,i know Mooping from Phue toei, really good chap>The one thing i must say i have noticed since i have been down here in Koh Chang as opposed to at home is,the humidity here is far greater, especially late afternoon, seems to be a drier heat up north, but still 30c and humid is better than 39-40c,will go back in June, hopefully temps a bit cooler then.

Too be honest its not the heat that bothers me, its the humidity. Would rather have 38 degrees and no humidity than 30 degrees and humidity.

I like The Eastern part of Thailand, Chanthaburi, Trat and Rayong all have some great places to live. I also like Kanchanburi, but it gets a bit hot there this time of the year.
Can't ever see myself up in Isan to be honest, and the other tourist hotspots don't really hold any interest to me
