Strangely enough we grew under contract and then supplied Weetabix at there then Wellingborough site the grain for Weetabix. We also grew mustard for Coleman's in Norwich and Taylor's Newport Pagnell Mustard. Sadly Taylor's has long since gone. My grandfather cultivated horseradish near of our streams on the farm for his home made horseradish. Christ that horseradish had more of a kick than Wasabi mustard too, cleared ones nasal passages and the flow of lachrymose fluid was indeed copious followed or accompanied sometime with great sneezing fits too. Might be why I enjoy spicy foods all due to being conditioned by that earlier childhood and young mans diet.

United Foods (sic) are dropping it as it seems it does not cut the mustard.

Missed the point. Nostalgia versus reality. I raised from five years old in Sussex. My maternal grandmother moved to Kent. I knew everything mentioned in this post. Of hop oast houses, no longer. Of the places; knew them all.

The topic stirred nostalgia in a different area to yours, as well as reality linked to the subject of ''beer.''. I can recall the grandparents of some of our farm staff's children recounting to us their experiences of going ''hopping.'' In reality yes it was an escape to fresh air for Londoners at the time twixt the two wars. But it was very hard work and paid a pittance too. That was the reality of the matter. Anyway all conversations tend to ramble around a bit. Now are we to break our time honoured traditions here by not straying and as a result we end up staying on topic. Good grief man such an action would be tantamount to heresy. Imagine the result from above.
