If they just got their legal take, the govt wouldn't know what to do with it all

It's not so much the width of the tax net as 1) all the holes in it for corrupt people to slip thru 2) What tax is collected then suffers various cuts to corruption Loads of rich people should be paying tax but aren't, and in some cases even fiddle it so they get tax back when they shouldn't. When the powers that be finally get around to using money for infrastructure there's then a 30% corruption haircut.

The simple way in my mind at least
1. Flat rate income tax at say 10% for everyone 2. Put a THB 2 tax on every ATM / OTC transaction 3. Increase VAT after coming up with a basket of VAT essential goods

Increase VAT after coming up with a basket of VAT essential goods I don't like VAT- it adds the job of tax collector to every struggling businessman, and encourages fraud, misreporting and black marketeering. I like property taxes - you can't hide land, and it's easy to seize if the tax is not paid for a long time, it also encourages productive use of the land SC

There's no point increasing taxes, especially on the poor. Cut out the corruption and it's all good.

They are trying to push upgrading Sor Por Kor land to Chanote. Why, cos Chanote over 5 Rai is taxed whether it makes a lot of money or not.

Agreed, until the rampant corruption and tax dodging is controlled there can be little or no improvement.
The current administration seems to be trying to fight corruption but it is going to be long and ongoing campaign to change the system and the mindset of the Thai people.Singapore took many years to do it but they did succeed in the end to a fairly high degree still a way to go though

Taking money off poor people doesn't make them richer. People here talking about 10% income tax on everyone and more VAT. Tells me they no <duck> all about poverty.

How about a standard, regulated, worthy, and enforced hourly wage instead of the expected day wage scheme?
Dreaming, I know.

^^^^, readily available all over Thailand, its known as Rai Duan.
If the peasants refuse to register their business and pay taxes that allow them access to the social security scheme etc up to them.
If their parents would rather spend money on lao kao and hi lo, up to them.
Personally I would rather spend my money on education, but that seems to take a back seat when the latest mobile phone, 60 inch telly or latest Izuzu truck buys more face.
If your pension scheme is reliant on Little Lek snaggaging a farang, you may well have problems.
