"most runways are named for their magnetic headings" I for one didn't know that. "THANK THE PLANET'S SHIFTY MAGNETIC POLES FOR RUNWAY RENAMING FOR DECADES, PILOTS heading into or out of Wichita Eisenhower National Airport in southeast Kansas have had three runways to choose from: 1L/19R, 1R/19L, and 14/32. Now, at the orders of the FAA, the airport will spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to give itself a makeover. Workers will repaint those huge numbers at the ends of each runway and replace copious signage. Pilots and air traffic controllers will study new reference manuals and approach plates, all updated to reflect an airport whose three runways have been renamed. World, meet 2L/20R, 2R/20L, and 15/33—which happen to be the same runways that have been welcoming planes since 1954." www.wired.com/story/airports-rename-runways-magnetic-shift/

Might be easier to leave the runway names as is, and tell the pilots to land at a one degree angle.

Might be easier to leave the runway names as is, and tell the pilots to land at a one degree angle. Not as simple as that. Some places can have a magnetic variation of several degrees in a year so afer say y years are 40 degrees wrong. Also navigation software has to be considered. If we did not change runway information it would be soon like driving in Bangkok with a 10 year old GPS and having to do what it said to do.

Years ago I helped run a flightsim virtual airline. We even provided routing. I contacted AERAD a British chart maker, and asked what they did with out of date charts. They responded asking why anyone would want out of date charts, as it was against regulations to fly with them. So I explained what we did, and thanked them for their time. I thought that was that. 2 weeks later I received about £300s worth of pre release and new charts, covering the globe. I hadn't even given my address.

Is white paint that expensive? All you need is a reliable airline and a good pilot

Our best man has worked for Air Services Australia (or some name like that) for 35 years as a sim trainer since giving up his comercial pilot instructors job. I once asked him to explain briefly how it worked and all I heard was "Well 5764 vector to waypoint 475.67 align with runway 253 at asl 31.65 to 43 server.....". I never asked him again.
