Well, Elon Musk did it again. A Falcon Heavy launched, his red Tesla roadster with a Man(nequin) at the wheel on the long way to Mars.
and of course, in the middle of the dashboard a sign DON'T PANIC

I really enjoyed The Register headline for this story: "My God, it's full of cars".
(For those who don't recognise the allusion, it's to 2001: A Space Odyssey - My God, it's full of stars.)

President Trump has been heard from. Mind you I wonder if someone dared to tell him Elon Musk is a South African Canadian who only recently moved to the States. "President Donald Trump has praised Elon Musk, writing: "Congratulations @elonmusk and @spacex on the successful #FalconHeavy launch. This achievement, along with @nasa’s commercial and international partners, continues to show American ingenuity at its best!"" Please also hide the wiki page from Trump "Musk has stated that the goals of SolarCity, Tesla, and SpaceX revolve around his vision to change the world and humanity.[25] His goals include reducing global warming through sustainable energy production and consumption, and reducing the "risk of human extinction" by establishing a human colony on Mars." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elon_Musk

It's a matter of him being FIRST generation American. Seems to some that's the important distinction

Latest update: "The random walk of cars and their collision probabilities with planets On February 6th, 2018 SpaceX launched a Tesla Roadster on a Mars crossing orbit. We perform N-body simulations to determine the fate of the object over the next several million years, under the relevant perturbations acting on the orbit. The orbital evolution is initially dominated by close encounters with the Earth. The first close encounter with the Earth will occur in 2091. The repeated encounters lead to a random walk that eventually causes close encounters with other terrestrial planets and the Sun. Long-term integrations become highly sensitive to the initial conditions after several such close encounters. By running a large ensemble of simulations with slightly perturbed initial conditions, we estimate the probability of a collision with Earth and Venus over the next one million years to be 6% and 2.5%, respectively. We estimate the dynamical lifetime of the Tesla to be a few tens of millions of years." arxiv.org/abs/1802.04718

Just what space needs, more junk! As I understand it he wants to put a poly tunnel on Mars. Bit depressing one of the first things we put on it will be plastic

It at least has some bio-degradable carbon parts which also deteriorate nicely with harsh unfiltered UV Sunlight. Allegedly that is.

It's that time of the year when we look back in wonder "But where is this vehicle? The current location is 208,637,551 miles (335,769,695 km, 2.244 AU) from Earth, moving away from Earth at a speed of 23,393 mi/h (37,647 km/h, 10.46 km/s). ... Assuming the battery still works, Starman has listened to Space Oddity 84,873 times since launch in one ear, and to Is there Life On Mars? 114,363 times in the other ear. ..." www.whereisroadster.com
