Slap in the face': Retired cop trapped in Thailand after horror crash A retired police officer left in a coma after he was struck off his motorbike and left for dead was trapped in Thailand for weeks as his insurer mulled over if it should pay for his evacuation. Les Ford’s adult children Emma, 28, and James, 25, have emptied their bank accounts and done all they can to pull together $115,000 to pay to evacuate Les back to Melbourne’s Alfred Hospital on Tuesday. The pair also relied on family, friends, and the community to help fork out thousands of dollars every day to keep their dad in a Bangkok hospital, with the final hospital bill costing $72,953 www.9news.com.au/national/2018/07/26/18/48/les-ford-trapped-in-thailand-after-horror-crash

Feel sorry for the guy for sure
But lets summerise the facts shall we:
Ex copper who should know better gets clattered off a motocycle is not wearing a helmet or has the proper license and then family tries to blame Thailand when his insurance in Aussie rejects his claim and i bet he is in Bummie or another private hospital as well..
“He always does the right thing"....obviously not, if he had an Aussie bike license and worn a helmet the insurance company would have stumped up for his treatment
If i went to Aussie, rode a motocycle without a proper license or wearing the manadated protective equipment whose fault ia it and should i expect the Aussie Gov to pay for my medical treatment in a private hospital ?

There is one point. It said he was "struck off" the bike. It looks like another vehicle driver was involved. In that case in other countries the person at fault of the accident would be liable for all costs or at least the proportion he was liable for. Here not.

In other countries if one party doesnt have the license, that party is responsible irrespective, besides struck off the bike could mean anything... i clattered a guy on a bike and struck him off the bike as he tried to undertake me while i was turning left, i was in the correct lane, with indicator on...the accident was completely his fault, even the BIB agreed and fked him off when his hand came out trying for cash So maybe in addition to no license and helmet he was riding like a complete tw@t as many of the retired farangs do...never ridden a bike in their lives retire, move to Thailand to shack up with a slapper and all of a sudden they think they are fking Barry Sheene

When you take out insurance read the fine print. I always choose the same insurer and when it comes to unlicensed motorbike riding in Thailand the warnings are in capital letters on the application form before you sign up.

People tend to say "I always do like this and never had a problem in God knows how many years". Of course such 'guarantee' don't have real value, but sounds nice while bragging in the pub and just before leaving on your bike

I've seen two friends in the pub in the evening then heard their heads were removed driving home at 4am to save themselves 400 Baht.
