It must be over 20 years ago now, but I still remember being in Mandalay and talking to a young man. He spotted an old man on the other side of the street and hailed him. This old man spoke English perfectly with an upper class accent. I was astonished. It turned out that he had been professor of English at the local university. The university had been closed by the military regime (can't have the people too educated, of course). And the professor was now an unemployed alcoholic.

When I go into a hardware shop in town, before I can open my mouth, the boss calls one of his Burmese staff over. He has good English.
