"It’s only appropriate that I found a story idea on storage failure right as I experienced the worst hard drive failure of my life. Long story short, after two days of agony, I lost some downloaded files, nothing I can’t live without, and my entire Outlook contact list. Years of building up contacts, all gone. So it was a brutal weekend. In 25 years of PC ownership I’ve never experienced a drive failure anywhere near close to this." www.itworld.com/article/2938996/hardware/when-will-your-hard-drive-fail.html

I bought one of them new fangled smart phone things yesterday (that's why I haven't been here much in the last 24 hours) I thought that I had all my contacts stored on the SIM card, found out that I didn't when the girl in the shop took my old SIM and put it into the new phone.
She had to cut it down to size with a pair of scissors to make it fit.
Balls.

Nano SIM.
With more than a bit of perseverance I managed to position it correctly in my old mobile, copied all the contact entries from the phone memory on to the SIM (one at a time) stuck it back in to my new phone, and bingo, got them all back.
I've written them all down in a notepad (paper) as well, just to be on the safe side.
I really feel for you on your HD situation, happened to me about eight years ago, and of course being the consummate IT professional that I am, I had nothing backed up. That really smarted at the time.
Now my 500Gig internal drive is auto backed up to an external 1TB drive which then synchronises with a second 1TB drive..... I don't want to go through that again.

Te contacts wil probably be in the old pone as it was set to save contacts to phone rather than sim. you can recover them if you still have the phone.

Store them on the cloud server, I'm on QQ and WeChat ( Chinese apps) and they automatically back up all your contact list from a smartphone. I think Google has that function too. That, or take a pic of your contacts and put it in your external drive.

Just to be sure, the HD crash story was not my personal story. It was the story of who ever wrote that article. Myself, well I have backups, although I might skip a week or two sometimes. My mobile I connect to my notebook (USB cable) and then I just copy contacts from the mobile to the SSD in my notebook. From my notebook I sometimes backup to two different USB memory sticks, sometimes generate an ISO file which I transfer to a 'box' with DVD burner. As for the cloud, forget it (for now). I don't like of the idea of possible compensation instead of getting my data back. I might use it as temporary additional storage (files bundled and encrypted).

I was also dead against the invisible people on clouds playing harps and stealing your info. I use QQ backup which is ace, Google has tentacles everywhere a bit wary of that. Google Plus especially. I got into there to add someone to my chat and I had 19 500 views what on earth is that? It's only my Gmail I don't post anything else or do anything else, really weirded me out.

You're in good company, Ms. Trix. An ever older lady has similar doubts on the clouds.
