Interesting read, especially since it refers to "unnamed heirs". "Dutch art panel's ruling against Jewish family criticised as 'step back' Committee backed museum in battle over Kandinsky painting obtained before Nazis invaded The decision of a Dutch art committee to back one of the Netherlands’ most prestigious museums in its attempt to hold on to a prized painting obtained from a Jewish family in 1940 has sparked an international outcry over the fate of Nazi loot across Europe. ... At a conference in Berlin last week to celebrate the second decade of the principles, Ronald Lauder, the president of the Jewish World Congress, expressed concern and suggested Dutch moral leadership on the issue had been dented. The Netherlands is one of only five governments to have established restitution bodies. ..." www.theguardian.com/world/2018/dec/05/dutch-art-panels-ruling-against-jewish-family-criticised-as-step-back

Do those people ever give up ? Reading the press release clearly shows that the evidence given, stated regarding the artwork is circumstantial and one may say creative in its content. One notes that legal actions are being handled by American lawyers in an American court concerning a similar issue. Note that the Lewenstein’s immediate family had a good relationship with the museum after the war and did not try to retrieve the painting. Surely when one notes the family's attitude in the immediate post wars years when no efforts were it seems made concerning the earlier ownership and subsequent sale of the painting confirms that the current action can only be claimed as being vexatious and as an action for pure financial gain. One cannot dispute that the comments made... ''The municipality of Amsterdam argued in its rebuttal to the family’s claim that the piece was important to the museum as it was “on permanent display and … the essential link in the limited overview of Kandinsky’s work in the museum’s collection,” was somewhat badly presented. However to my mind the plaintiff's case is flawed in many ways and is intended as a financial outcome result.

Regarding the "suggested Dutch moral leadership on the issue had been dented" I think the reason the Netherlands government established a 'restitution body' may have been misunderstood. I think it's much more a Dutch dislike of 'loose ends'.

My personal opinion is that the Dutch moral leadership has been first class. Holland as said, is one of only five nations that established a restitution body.
Now perhaps if the Jewish World Congress were to look in the mirror and the Palestine situation in depth they might not like that which they see, Israel was established under duress on stolen ground and the ongoing killing and theft of other people's property, and stifling of basic food, water, and other life support items as well as ground is still going on at the point of guns and other assorted weapons of war.
These are the criminals who use the expression ''DURESS'' as part of their supporting argument in a legal action which can only be described as a vindictive action to obtain yet more property in underhand deceitful ways.
The Jews wail and gnash their teeth claiming their persecution over the years. Perhap a look in the mirror of history may well show them what the root cause of their self inflicted claimed problems are.

I'm all for fine art being accessible to all.
This is no more than an attempted money grab by leeches.

Not sure about 'money grabbing leeches' unless you mean the lawyers Still as mentioned before I find the " unnamed heirs" somewhat annoying.
