Due to modern day ROHS standards, apparently lead free solder is used thus creating tin whisker growth over time and shorting components out.

Lots of failures I've been aware of here in Thailand are due to uncontrolled environment regarding temperature and humidity combined with downtime unacceptable during working hours and preventive maintanance outside (working hours) not being part of the service contract. Consequently stuff only gets cleaned when something breaks.

Never seen cases (yet) with 'rotten' mainboards.
