Might do a Brisbane Auckland run on one this year. Never been on one and that route seems one of the shorter.

Never been on one either. Passengers seemed to like it, but not airlines.
With 2 engine planes being allowed to fly across oceans we have ETOPS-240 A-330, ETOPS-330 some B-777 models, ETOPS-370 A-350. Four engines makes a plane more expensive. Maybe A-380 just came too late on the market, maybe some technology jumps were not foreseen or given value.
Unclear (at least to me) is how much of the A-380 learning curve and technological innovation is used in newer planes like the A-350 without being explicitly 'priced' (as in part of the budget) as such.

787-9 can do PER to LHR, and I think 787-10 will SYD to LHR. Not sure I'd want to do either in one flight though. I've flown with Aussies, and they drank a 747 dry on an 11 hour hop.

Emirates asked for a stretched version, then canceled the order. That sounded the death knell. Once the current back log is cleared that will be it.

Not too many 747s still flying passengers (with 'reliable' airlines that it), but 747-8F seems to be doing reasonably. There's no A380F, canceled years ago due to lack of interest and getting the passenger version ready being more important at the time. Probably even modifying an A380F might be a tad expensive. Soon spare parts more expensive than a complete plane? Most costly parts are probably the four RR engines.
