This morning as I put the enormous amount of 100 Baht on my rabbit card I got a nice pamphlet (in Thai) explaining the need to register the card. Seems it's part of "know your customer" and anti-money-laundering. So I guess I'll queue up to register next time. More info on the rabbit site. "FROM FEBRUARY 15TH, 2019 ONWARDS ALL RABBIT CARDS ARE REQUIRED TO BE REGISTERED FOR IDENTITY VERIFICATION PURPOSES All Rabbit Cards are required to be registered for identity verification purposes (KYC: Know Your Customer) according to Anti-Money Laundering Act, B.E. 2542 when Top Up value or purchase Trip Pass. The unregistered Rabbit Cards will still be normally usable. However, the next time to Top Up value or Trip pass, card owner are required […]" rabbit.co.th/en/uncategorized/from-february-15th-2019-onwards-all-rabbit-cards-are-required-registration-for-identity-verification-purposes/

That is interesting. I would not have pegged rabbit cards as a feasible way to launder money. I use the card only because when i go to siam i hate the lines. I go to siam once every three months though, ha. Maybe i will ditch the card after i empty it.

In Turkey when I was there to beat massive inflation people used to buy telephone call tokens which always paid out the current value of a call which was indexed fully for inflation.

I don't think things like Rabbit cards were really considered much by the original Anti-Money Laundering Act in 1999 when smart cards generally weren't around. There's been a tightening up generally on all these forms of holding money though, as the powers that be have realised there are a lot more ways to store wealth than there used to be. I think they've also realised money laundering and corruption starts at an early stagein Thailand Just this week we've had to sign some forms relating to the school cards the parents and kids have that can store money balances for buying things at their shops etc. The vendor supplying the cards is Thai Smart Card. Same principle as rubl mentions, all part of the KYC regulations.

On the way home arriving ar BRT Nararam3 I saw no queue so used the opportunity to register my rabbit. Girls had a special device bit like smart phone and creditcard reader combined. Touchscreen. Small, or more like smallKeyboard displayed, other 'half' of screen to be scrolled through to the next field. Usual confusion about my 'middle name' Johannes which as some might guess is neither a Chinese type middle name nor my family name I had all prepared, written down my email address, mobile phone number, added address on request but fumbling around it still took them ten minutes or so. Mind you, that includes my second rabbit card which only took three out of those ten minutes. At least the lady behind the counter had two others to help her
