It is the 50th Anniversary of the oldest bar in town - The Madrid in Patpong.
To mark the occasion all local beers and spirits will be 50 baht until (wait for it) 5.55 pm. It then reverts to normal happy hour prices of 70 baht for the above between 4pm - 7pm. Normal excellent complimentary food available, not sure about the ladies as they are no longer in the first flush of youth.
Anyone who has never been before it will be a rare chance to see what serious boozing was like here before the plastic paddy bars opened for the benefit of the grockles.

Proper old school place the Madrid with fine pizzas and a pleasant welcome.
It won't last much longer though.

Well, to those who didn't go - it was your loss. Reminds me of years ago, one of the lads came in late, boss said to him, you should have been here at eight o'clock, reply, "why what happened" then walked off. So what happnened?

Well not very much in truth. Predominantly older white males with a fair sprinkling of no longer young but still quite fit Thai ladies. Some had travelled far specially for the event, USA, Australia and Chang Mai were mentioned. I discovered why it is called the Madrid. That is what it was called when (Daeng??) bought it and she changed nothing except for getting rid of the live music. I quizzed some of the older Americans about whether they were ex-CIA, but got no sensible.response.

Not a part of town I frequented, last time I was there was about 20 years ago to buy something from the night market a farang friend wanted. Probably because your trouser leg wasnt rolled up in the appropriate manner, did you knock three times before entering the premises? Were you wearing an orange, purple or black shirt, properly emblazoned?

Actually rgs you've lost me a bit there....Ah possibly I've sussed it now.
As regards the prices it was 50 baht up till 5.50. But I can't swear to it as I never actually saw the bin just the total. I think 60s/70s prices would be pushing it a bit.
The location? Still some nice old bars there, Crown Royal, Cosmos, Crystal Palace etc, but today's drinker prefers Hooters and cod Irish places.

I cant claim credit for the analogy, it was made by a catholic from the 26 counties, yes I had to think about it as well before it sunk in. Some you tube channel I was watching, Ian Paisley was mentioned, remarks such as, "i used to think he was the enemy, now i realise he was correct" "at least the brits let us follow our religion" I had to google, the indian rent boy, a derogatory term for their pm, sometimes referred to as, the roma. It was catholics complaining about "progressive" policies such as abortion and gay marriage, anti eu sentiment was also thrown in, maybe paddy aint as thick as some would portray him.

I think you refer to a classical case of a few disgruntled people. Maybe even some trolling. Difficult to say without some URLs. Also keep in mind that nowadays people easily write the most vulgar things on blogs, twitter and FB thinking they're anonymous. "Juncker is an alcoholic", "BoJo is British Trump", "Jeremy Corbyn is a Russian communist", and that's just the nice ones. The value of it? Not sure, may be just a harmless way for people letting of steam. Ask your local psychiatrist.

Still to expand the opinion of that catholic into a suggestion as to 'people', or 'catholics' followed by 'maybe Paddy ain't that stupid' goes into (wishful) thinking only. As I wrote too many people write just about anything without it being clear if what they write has any real meaning. Mostly it's accepted by equally disgruntled people but even that might only make it interesting to sociologists and other 'lefties'. Personally I shove it on one heap with "Boris the Turk' insults and the like.
