As I'm no longer UK resident, options are limited for car insurance in the UK.
In years gone by, I'd just borrow a parent's car and they'd add me to their insurance. These days it seems to attract a hefty premium to add a non-UK resident onto their UK policy. A lot of insurers/ underwriters just reject non-UK residents outright and won't provide cover.
What do all you UK expats living in Thailand do, when you go back to the UK?
I came across the following websites that offer UK car insurance for non-UK residents:
Money Maxim - has suggestions for a few insurers: "Short Term Car Insurance for Visitors to the UK. Find and compare short term car insurance. Live overseas but want to insure a car you keep in the UK, or a friend's or relation's car whilst here? We can help!"
Tempcover.com - this was recommended to me by the AA as one of their partners. It's also on the money maxim website

I've just taken out a policy via Day Insure. The actual policy is with Aviva.
Relative to annual insurance for a UK resident it's expensive.
But it's a lot cheaper than hiring a car. In my case I did it on my mum's car. Her policy with the AA wouldn't add me on as I was non-resident. Which would mean cancelling her existing policy and starting a new one with me on. I did that last year, then cancelled for another policy just before leaving UK.
Cost for 19 days was GBP 120
+ an extra GBP 13 I elected to cover "Motor Excess Protection". Never done the latter before, but as I understand it, it covers your excess, which on mine was 450 quid excess. Underwritten by Strategic Insurance Services Ltd.
Rental was over 300 quid for 19 days plus the hassle of collecting, picking up.
The good thing about the policy is it runs parallel to my mum's own policy. Any claims, accidents I may have don't affect her policy in any way.
One thing that made a big difference to premiums was a UK driving licence, it was around 60 quid cheaper by entering my UK licence so they could validate it in the system.

Seems to me to be a good deal you got there Fletch. Something I never thought about, car insurance as when we tripped back to the UK the family trust took care of such issues. I do retain a U K address though and have done for a long time. Mind you as to the legality of that address action I am not sure how one would stand if involved in a RTA.
