Trump allowed them a 'freeish' hand. Wonder what the "quid pro quo" is.
In the mean time the Kurds have been betrayed yet again. Furthermore 'the West' will be blamed by Kurds, Syrians, ISIS, local gerbils, etc. Expect a new flood of refugees. Hope the ISIS terrorists still imprisoned won't be freed.

One thing I agree with Trump on, though I suspect by we he meant the USA. We should never have got in volved in the ME. Assuming he meant the Gulf Wars. However no USA involvement no NATO involvement.

"Gülnur Aybet, one of the Turkish president’s senior advisers, told CNN: “President Trump and President Erdoğan have reached an understanding over precisely what this operation is.” Aybet added that Trump “knows what the scope of this operation is”. Hours after the bombing began, Trump issued a statement mildly criticising the offensive aimed at Kurdish forces, which for nearly five years fought alongside the US against Isis. “The United States does not endorse this attack and has made it clear to Turkey that this operation is a bad idea,” the statement said, before noting: “There are no American soldiers in the area.” In remarks later, Trump presented the invasion as a historical inevitability, saying Turks and Kurds “have been fighting each other for centuries”. And he downplayed the US debt to Kurdish fighters, saying: “They didn’t help us in the second world war, they didn’t help us with Normandy … but they’re there to help us with their land.”" www.theguardian.com/world/2019/oct/09/turkey-syria-attack-latest-news-kurds-trump"Pompeo: US didn’t give Turkey a ‘green light’ to invade Syria Trump indicated he wasn’t worried about ISIS fighters escaping northern Syria, because if they do, ‘they’re going to be escaping to Europe.’ U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is defending the Trump administration’s withdrawal of military support for Kurdish forces in Syria, just as Turkey invaded the northern part of the country to push out Kurdish militias. U.S. President Donald Trump late Sunday announced a withdrawal of U.S. forces in northeastern Syria after a phone call with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan of Turkey, effectively exposing the U.S.-allied Kurds to Turkish and ISIS aggression. Turkey launched airstrikes on northeastern Syria on Wednesday, prompting condemnation from European governments and both parties in Congress. But during a “PBS NewsHour” interview released on Wednesday, Pompeo denied that the administration had granted permission for Turkish aggression, saying: “The United States didn’t give Turkey a green light.” Still, Pompeo said, Turkey had a “legitimate security concern,” adding that the U.S. has supported Turkey in preventing violence from spilling into the country. He also made it clear that his priority was defending the U.S. from terrorism, even though that could come at the cost of not protecting the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, who have been loyal allies to the U.S. in the fight against ISIS." www.politico.eu/article/pompeo-us-didnt-give-turkey-a-green-light-to-invade-syria/

The Turks already have one genocide to their name, the Armenian one. Now they're adding a second.

Johnny Turk indeed has a nauseous reputation, not to be trusted by any stretch of the imagination

As for Trump, good friend, really. "Trump shrugs off ISIS fighters fleeing Syria: They’ll ‘be escaping to Europe’ The Kurds ‘didn’t help us in the Second World War, they didn’t help us with [the D-Day landings in] Normandy,’ US president says. U.S. President Donald Trump appeared to wash his hands of responsibility for events unfolding in Syria, indicating that if ISIS fighters being held by Kurdish forces manage to get free, “they’re going to be escaping to Europe," not the U.S. Trump late Sunday announced a withdrawal of U.S. forces in northeastern Syria, effectively exposing American-allied Kurds to Turkish aggression, with Turkey launching airstrikes on northeastern Syria on Wednesday. Asked whether he was concerned about ISIS fighters fleeing Kurdish custody and becoming a threat elsewhere, Trump said during a press conference on Wednesday: “Well they’re going to be escaping to Europe. That's where they want to go, they want to go back to their homes.”" www.politico.eu/article/trump-shrugs-off-isis-fighters-fleeing-syria-theyll-be-escaping-to-europe/

Turkey invading Syria, BoJo having been very supportive of Turkey's entry in the E.U. in the past is fact. It would seem he was even accused by conspiracy theory fools in 2010. "Boris the Turk. This is the first in a new series of profiles of some of the main conspirators plotting to destroy European civilisation by admitting Turkey to the European Union . Boris Johnson, as he styles himself, is the mayor of London. His grandfather was one Ali Kemal Bey , a Turk."

The Turks already have one genocide to their name, the Armenian one. Now they're adding a second. The American track record of abandoning allies at short notice is not unimpressive either, Laos and the Hill tribes, South Vietnam, China after WWII, The Kurds and probably lots more.

Please forgive my ignorance here but what longer term strategy is fuelling the attack by the Turks?

Please forgive my ignorance here but what longer term strategy is fuelling the attack by the Turks? They are trying to preempt the call for a free Kurdish state, there's a large Kurdish population in Turkey.

The Balkans has always been a flashpoint throughout history, it's the bridge between East and West and historically between Christianity and Muslims religions. By Trump pulling US forces out of Syria, he has reduced Western influence and power in the region, of which the Kurdish community was an important part. What that leaves is Russia as the major influencer in the region, in short, Trump just gave Putin a substantial advantage in the region at the likely cost of increased ISIL activity in Europe and the UK. Putin must have some deep dirt on Donald, I'm sure we'll get sight of it one day.
