When I reflect on all the beer I drink, I feel ashamed. Then I look into the glass
and think about the workers in the brewery and all of their hopes and dreams.
If I did not drink this beer, they might be out of work and their dreams would
be shattered. I think, it is better to drink this beer and let their dreams come true,
than be selfish and worry about my liver.” Babe Ruth
"24 hours in a day and 24 beers in a case. Coincidence? I think not!” H. L Mencken
"Without question, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is beer. Oh, I grant you that the wheel was also a fine invention, But the wheel does not go nearly as well with pizza.”
“To some it is a six-pack. To me, it is a Support Group. Salvation in a can.” Leo Durocher
One night at Cheers , a TV Sitcom, Cliff Clavin said to his buddy, Norm Peterson: "Well, ya see, Normmy, it's like this. A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know, kills brain cells. But, naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers!”

I was starting with "did you know ..." but knowing my mangoes some here probably not only remember but also mourn the result of this colossal disaster: the loss of between 128,000 and 323,000 imperial gallons (580,000–1,470,000 l; 154,000–388,000 US gal) of beer "London Beer Flood The London Beer Flood was an accident at Meux & Co's Horse Shoe Brewery, London, on 17 October 1814. It took place when one of the 22-foot-tall (6.7 m) wooden vats of fermenting porter burst. The pressure destroyed another vessel, and between 128,000 and 323,000 imperial gallons (580,000–1,470,000 l; 154,000–388,000 US gal) of beer were released. The resulting wave of porter destroyed the back wall of the brewery and swept into an area of slum-dwellings known as the St Giles rookery. Eight people were killed, five of them attendees at the wake being held by an Irish family for a two-year-old boy. The coroner's inquest returned a verdict that the eight had lost their lives "casually, accidentally and by misfortune".[1] " en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_Beer_Flood

The missus and I used to drop in there at times for a drink, even took our two sons with us, indeed happy days and alas more years ago than we both like to remember.

From that coconutty article:
"The reason given for canceling it was “changing consumer lifestyles,” according to Nattakit Tangpoonsinthana, executive vice president of marketing for mall owner Central Pattana."
translation: we found a way to make more money out of it, maybe?

Is this really about changing lifestyles or is it about a change in the tourist base, the Chinese are not known to hang out in bars. And I imagine younger middle-class Thai's are following the same path as their Western peers, shunning pubs and alcohol completely, how sad is that. Everyone should go through an alcohol phase in their life, it's enlightening and invokes learning situations not found any other way. Imagine if Peter O'Toole, Robert Shaw and Oliver Read had remained tee-total, what a boring place the world would be.
