We were talking about beer recently and then today I read a piece about a man whose body brews beer in his gut! No really!
It seems the man, who was not a drinker, developed an overgrowth of yeast in his gut, every time he ate carbohydrates his gut brewed alcohol and he became p**sed.....how great is that, eats a pizza without the beer, gets drunk for free, nice one.
Apparently the man fell over a couple of times whilst this was happening and he ended up in hospital where his blood alcohol level was once recorded as 200 mg/dL, the equivalent of ten drinks. The doctors in ER noted he was a construction worker and decided he was a boozer as well, despite his protestations that he never touched a drop.....yea sure, you don't drink, we believe you, nod nod wink wink.
"The strange symptoms of auto-brewery syndrome (ABS) are recounted by researchers in a case study published in the British Medical Journal.
In the report, the researchers reveal how a once healthy, light social drinker began experiencing all the effects of alcoholism despite becoming teetotal following an injury.
The man first began experiencing uncharacteristic episodes of depression, "brain fog" and aggressive behaviour back in 2011 after taking a course of antibiotics for a thumb injury.
While recovering in hospital, his blood alcohol spiked as high as 400 mg/dL – twice the concentration recorded when he was pulled over by police – but again medical staff refused to believe that he did not drink alcohol despite his persistent denials, according to the report. The researchers said that in this particular case, they believe the antibiotics altered the man's gut microbiome, allowing the fungal growth which meant eating carbohydrates led to him becoming inebriated.
In the report, the researchers warn that ABS is likely an "under-diagnosed" condition and should be considered as a possibility in any case where someone appears to be intoxicated but denies they have consumed any alcohol".
So there you have it, your get out of jail free card....need an excuse for appearing to be p**sed, blame it on the yeast in your gut. Need a way to slash your expenditure by half, go gorge on some yeast
