Greetings,
This forum has been invaluable to me so far, especially the financial section.
However, i am ashamed to admit that i have given up in attempting to set up a portfolio and to manage my (modest) funds myself with the help of all the advice i find in books, this forum, ..
It is just too complicated, and juggling several jobs + a family ... I don't see how i could ever have the time to research, monitor...
On the other hand i am very aware that it is needed and that the real value of whatever money i have decreases every year through inflation , and just having turned 40 and having a family now makes it even more apparent that i need to do something.
Our family / work / financial situation is quite complex too, spread over Thailand and Europe...
So my question (which i predict will displease a lot of the senior members on this forum 😅) : is it possible to get a good financial advisor for a couple of sessions to set somtething up for us, and does anyone on this forum know where that reliable and skilled person could be found?
Eager to read the replies!

In Thailand, I very much doubt you'll find a "good financial advisor".
What's your nationality? In which country do you expect to retire?
And how much do you have to invest (initial lump sum, monthly additional savings)?
And from which country is most of your income coming?

Assuming you're a Brit., apologies if you are not:
I've been there on this subject just two years ago and it's very very difficult.
I wouldn't even think about trying to find a Thai based IFA, Thai or any other nationality, think minefield of nuclear IED's.
Trying to engage a UK based IFA when you're not UK resident is almost impossible. They will only deliver advice relevant to where the advice was given, this means they can't/won't give advice to you in Thailand but if you visit the UK for a holiday or similar they can and will.
You could try looking on unbiased.com and emailing IFA's to see if they will help, all will charge and it won't be inexpensive. Your best hope is that you'll find one with offshore IFA's based in Europe.
If you genuinely don't have the time because of your family or think that you can't handle the subject matter (I can relate to that), why not try setting up an account at Hargreaves Lansdowne in London, you may have to do this when you're back there for a holiday but if you're lucky you may not. HL's site is excellent, easy to use and loaded to the gills with useful helpful information that is easy to understand.....they also offer paid-for IFA advice and off the shelf portfolio's.
If I think of anything further that may help I'll post again later.

Have had some unhappy experiences here, and for me the key to getting more independent advice is paying on a fee-for-service basis - with none of the dreaded trailing commissions. Also registration by the local Thai authorities offers more assurance.
Based on past dealings, suggest you research two local firms - both have UK personnel (1) MBMG - Paul Gambles is the boss; (2) Core Harbour - Todd ex-MBMG

I was in a Lower Suk boozer a few years ago, some Brit was telling me he worked for a "leading British financial advisor company in Bangkok' I thought to myself, I have never heard of one, and, your down at heel unpolished 500 baht Bata shoes paint a different picture, but never mind, your BS probably impresses the tourists.

You will get varying answers on this forum, for the simple reason, our situations are different, a bit more info from you will help us point you in the right direction.

Catching an economy class Air Asia flight from DM to Udon a while back while some <theduck> in a wife beater was shouting at the top of his lungs into his cheap Nokia during boarding about his multi platform port folio... bla... effin bla.... We were in tears listening to his tripe.

^^^ Reminds me of an incident a few years ago, back when mobile 'phones were very expensive. There was a man on a train, braying loudly into his 'phone, annoying all his fellow passengers. One of those passengers then started having a heart attack. Passengers begged Mr. Mobile Phone to dial 999. He repeatedly refused. He eventually confessed that his 'phone was a dummy.

I dont know what it is about this country and Walts, what attracts them here?

I dont know what it is about this country and Walts, what attracts them here? It's far enough away from Blackpool to be unusual and exotic and the chances of bumping into anyone they know are near zero. Add to that the general population doesn't understand or care about the things they have to say and it's a perfect Mitty breeding ground. I met a BA baggage handler in DM years ago who was bigging it up about living in Thailand and being fluent in Thai, every other utterance was koh jai mai. Turns out he was really just plying the ID 90 discount ticket game and visiting several times a year, he'd never been outside Pattaya and only ever took a Thai Airways limo, beyond sad.
