A pity they didn't consider the consequences of depleting their own fish stocks.

A pity all the nonsense we read here. There are two parties and both are now in the 'demand' phase. As for depleting, the idea behind the E.U. regulation on fishing is to AVOID depleting fish stocks, any fish stocks. BTW most fish migrate yearly. Some of the 'British' fish migrate through 'Iceland' waters, or Norwegian, Danish, Dutch waters. Whatever the militant rhetoric from politicians fit for the ignorant public, scientists are aware the countries MUST work together or there will be no more fish in a few years time. PS remember this gem? "The truth about Boris Johnson’s kipper In an attempted stunt against Brussels red tape, the Brexiteer slammed British law in the Isle of Man, which is not even in the EU. Two things we know to be true. Boris Johnson likes to wave irrelevant props around (alas, poor brick) during speeches. And Boris Johnson can be a stranger to the truth. It’s a format that reached its zenith at the last of the Tory leadership hustings this week, when our wannabe prime minister brandished a smoked kipper and began ranting about EU regulation. “This kipper, which has been presented to me just now by an editor of a national newspaper, who received it from a kipper smoker in the Isle of Man, who is utterly furious, because after decades of sending kippers like this through the post, he has had his costs massively increased by Brussels bureaucrats who have insisted that each kipper must be accompanied by this, a plastic ice pillow. Pointless, expensive, environmentally damaging, ‘elf and safety, ladies and gentleman,” he told a chuckling crowd. “When we come out, therefore, we will not only be able to take back control of our regulatory framework, end this damaging regulatory overkill, but we will also be able to do things to boost Britain’s economy.” It could’ve been the perfect stunt, were it not for the inconvenient truth that the Isle of Man is not in the EU, and is not included within the scope of the UK’s EU membership, and the rules Johnson was referring to were set by Britain. As for depleting, the idea behind the E.U. regulation on fishing is to AVOID depleting fish stocks, any fish stocks. Then it's clearly not working. "A super trawler 14 times the size of UK fishing boats is plundering thousands of tonnes of fish from British waters" "environmentalists fear it could be endangering short beaked common dolphins and bluefin tuna." "The ship ... has been the target of a series of campaigns culminating in it being banned from Australian waters in 2013." "it is believed to be operating in breedings waters for sea bass, which is already overfished." www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2019/10/04/trawler-14-times-size-uk-fishing-boats-plundering-fish-british/

Each boat (or maybe each company) has the right to fish for what it's allocated. In principle they can do that with any boat (if the allotment is to a company) or the boat (if allotment is to a specific boat). Once the allotment has been caught they have to stop or be subjected to confiscation of catch and/or lawsuits. So the "plundering fish from British waters" may sound nice to some, it's just meaningless rhetoric to raise the patriotic people who still rely on lying politicians and their hacks. As for the larger trawlers, it ay be a good opportunity to scale down and give catch allocations only to small boats. That's also more likely to help small fishing communities. "Brexit 'opportunity to ban supertrawlers from UK waters' Environmental groups fear link between huge ships and spikes in dolphin deaths" www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/mar/07/ban-supertrawlers-from-uk-waters-after-brexit-say-green-campaignersFrom thetelegraph article "Under the common fisheries policy set out by the European Commission, each EU country is given a quota of fish it can catch in European waters. Each country then divides that quota between vessels, allocating set catch sizes along with documentation in the event of an inspection. A spokesman for the Marine Management Organisation, the government agency responsible for enforcing fishing regulations in UK waters, said it boarded the boat on Wednesday, adding: “No infringements of fishing regulations were found.”" Below article is from 2016 but nothing has really changed since then, regarding fish that is. Also BoJo hasn't changed in his rhetoric. "Is the EU ‘pinching our fish’? The UK does have fishing quotas, as does every country within the EU with a fishing industry. For stocks shared with non-EU countries, the quotas are agreed with those countries. The European Union’s Council of Ministers sets the tonnage of specific fish, or ‘Total Allowable Catch’ (TAC), which can be caught within EU waters and then divides this between each member state. The quota each member state receives is based largely on how much they fished in those areas in the 1970s, before the Common Fisheries Policy came into effect." fullfact.org/europe/eu-pinching-our-fish/
