So my AC went kaput. The girl that runs the local restaurant sent her husband round. Slightly bamboozled, he deduced there had been a short circuit, and phoned an electrician. He duly turned up, sucked his teeth, got to the root of the problem, a little bit of rewiring later, and the bill was presented.
400 baht.

Reminds me of the 50tish and 60tish in the Netherlands when things were still tight and we 'fumbled around' repairing stuff.

Some of these somchais are smarter than we think. I've had similar episodes. People ask me why I go drinking with the somchais, I have been called a thai apologist by someone who lived in pattaya, "what the eff do i need to talk to them for" "they have nothing to say I need to hear" etc etc. Up my way, they pay their way, freeloaders are soon identified and told not to come back. My main reason is, they all know each other, if i need a leccy or plumber or air con man or tree surgeon, they all know who to call, and there is no farang double pricing. Need a septic tank emptied, up my way 300 baht. Said farang from pattaya seperated from his mrs and was phoning me trying to get me to translate etc for him, I blocked his number. Today, the aircon man rocked up, proper company van, not some somchai mobile belching black smoke out an non existant exhaust and not firing on all cylinders. Proper clean overalls, no fetid pla ra or som tam breath. Took him upstairs, he did a post test (power on switch test) counted to 12, pulled out a lap top and hooked it up to the main board, did a bite check (built in test equipment), asked me for the breaker box, isolated, his mate went to the van, came back with a couple of leads, they were changed, power back on, air con fired right up, Total cost 950 baht, a complete bargain. Printed off a receipt from his lap top and gave me a one year guarantee. The other week the tree surgeon came round, agreed price, 1,000 baht, I aint paying him to cut the trees, I am paying him to transport and dump them. Woman across the road asked the price, and said too much, somchai said, I can cut your trees for 300 baht, ok mai, ok ka. Trees were cut, and somchai left, said ee kee neow is now left with a load of branches, trees etc she will either have to dispose of herself, or pay someone to take away.

Good plumbers are as difficult to find here as in the UK...and just as busy.
Funny how life is but an echo of home at times.

So this weeks purchase was curtains, the first set at 4.8 running metres was just a little by shy of what I needed for the window ( 4.6 x 2.2 metres ) by the time you take in the undulation for the eyelets. So I bought a second pair, 6 running metres, put them on the first window and covered two glass entry doors on the north side of the house with the original pair.
Total cost, 4,100 baht for 10.8 x 2.2 metres, rail, ties, supplied and fitted. Great.
