Loei I enjoyed - the drive there is stunning, and that beautiful wide open valley as you reach the town is something to behold. The Kan raft festival in September is something to behold. I've not been to Rayong, I was led to believe it is firmly on the tourist trail and something to behold. Lamphun and Lampang are decent enough towns, Mae Taen is more natural than Mae Rim, which is a de facto tourist resort. Phrao, Fang and Chiang Dao are more my cup of tea - with Tha Ton being another favourite. I've been all over northern Thailand, including of course, Chiang Rai and the Golden Triangle. I can't remember most of the names of the small towns up there, however I suppose I'd remember if I looked the guide book I wrote for Chiang Rai and the Golden Triangle. The flight into Mae Hong Son is top class, and the flight out of Pai an experience - while the road between is something again, to experience. Phitsanulok is underrated, as are the Northern plateaus. Udon Thani is fine, as is Nong Khai. Ubon Ratchathani is underrated too. KK is fine too I suppose, but I do prefer more country style living. Hat Yai is a hell hole, Songhkla is decent enough if you like young Muslims yelling at you in the street. Nonthaburi is a bit boring - but I suppose the tourist trail places of BKK, Patts, Phuket, Koh Samui and the like all have their advantages.
Utturadit is on my things to do list, as is Rayong and Chantaburi, however they can wait until after I've been to Japan and Burma. I'll be spending a month between both countries on my next trip. Maybe Taiwan too - I'll see how I feel.
Japan, an amazing country, Tokyo is like something out of Blade Runner.
Burma, its what many think they will find when they come to Thailand, get there quick before it gets ruined the way Thailand has.
Yes, I wouldn't want to be stuck in one place.
I've never been to Japan - I think Hiroshima, Osaka and Tokyo are on my list for this trip. I then fly to Yangon, four nights - and I'll make my way to Mandalay overland. I would love to do the Shan State trip shown on the Top Gear special - that can wait for another day.
