After their victory at El Alamein, soldiers of General Montgomery’s British Eighth Army, in particular Tommie Connor, rendered the song in English as follows:
Underneath the lantern by the barrack gate,
Darling I remember the way you used to wait.
Twas there that you whispered tenderly
that you loved me. You’d always be
My Lili of the lamplight – My own Lili Marlene. Time would come for the roll call
time for us to part. Darling I’d caress you
and press you on my heart.
And there ‘neath that far-off lantern light
I’d hold you tight, we’d kiss good night
My Lili of the lamplight – My own Lili Marlene.4
As the German fortunes of war faded, a curious French version quietly circulated in occupied France and Belgium. In this writer’s memory, it started as:
Près de la caserne quand le jour s’enfuit,
La vieille lanterne s’allume et luit.
Un soldat Allemand vint à passer.
Je lui ai demandé: « Pourquoi pleures-tu? »
et il m’a répondu:
« Eh, oui, nous sommes foutus.
Eh, oui, nous sommes foutus. » By the barracks as the day was flying by The old lantern would light up and glow. A German soldier came by, I asked him, “Why do you cry?” and he answered me:
‘Oh, yes, we are all doomed. Oh, yes, we are all doomed.’

From a German ...
Bernd Müller
Rest in peace Dame Vera. Your songs have helped to overcome the Nazi tyranny. Thanks from Germany.
Still hard his for this old lady to have experience how thankless mob the monuments of British war heroes destroy.

Oh dear your paranoia is showing again please read the comment from a German lady Bernd Müller a proper German not a wanna be second class plastic one. She is referring to the vandals from BLM and Antifa attacks and desecration of Churchill and others statues along with the sacrilegious attacks upon the memorials to the war dead. Of course you no doubt offer tacit support for such actions don't you. Your Vera Lynn post was indeed indicative of your obnoxious snide comments, highlights what an odious little creature you are.

Your Vera Lynn ... highlights what an odious little creature you are. Sometimes I think this place would benefit from some TVF moderators. Can't we all just get along?

So, no monuments of British war heroes were destroyed and just asking is already seen as an attack by weak-minded insecure English?
At least those war heroes were made of sterner stuff.

None so blind as those who do not wish to see The vandals and the rabbles actions in desecrating the war dead and n and national heroes.
At least those war heroes were made of sterner stuff.
Which is indeed more than can be said concerning your country and its countrymen and women.
Down on one knee yet are you?

Siampolee,
you wrote "how thankless mob the monuments of British war heroes destroy." When I ask what monuments were destroyed you start your usual abuse and rubbish. Now you you talk about 'desecrating the dead' as if bodies were dug up.
Fact remains no monuments were destroyed.

Again the defacing of any monument is regarded as destroying that which it represents or stands for. Can you get that into your Pickelhaube covered head.
