"Singapore expat jobs under threat in recession, local hire push Singapore has long been the city of choice for Western expats wanting an easy entrée into Asia. Clean, efficient, with low tax rates, it’s often seen as rivalling Hong Kong, especially with that city hit by street protests and unrest over China’s new national security law. Yet just when Singapore should be a magnet for global talent, some recruiters say the barriers to entry are mounting. The city is facing the worst recession in its history, forcing a rethink for some firms on expansion and hiring plans. Alongside soaring unemployment has come a spike in rhetoric against foreigners, seen by some Singaporeans as taking jobs from locals. An experienced nurse from New Zealand is finding out how tough it can be. She seemed, on paper at least, the ideal expat -- arriving right before Covid-19. But 11 months and over 200 failed applications later, she says she’s on the verge of going home, unable to land a work pass." sg.yahoo.com/finance/news/singapore-expat-jobs-under-threat-in-recession-local-hire-push-020939747.html

entrée? It's "appetiser" or "starter" in English. (And even in its other sense of "the right to join a particular group" it's misused here.)

The days of the white gods have had the writing on the wall for a long time in this part of the world, not only asia, but the middle east and africa.
Unless you have skills the locals require and are at the top of your game, forget it.
I know of Thais with excellent english skills, and internationally recognised qualifications in their field, one i know of has just returned to the uk to do an mba. if the truth be known, he is more farang than thai.

The brit embassy realised this, no need to employ expensive farang imports, employ locals to do the same job.

"Singapore firms get S$1 billion incentive to hire more locals Singapore will set aside an extra S$1 billion (US$733 million) to boost the domestic workforce in a further move to protect local jobs amid the pandemic recovery, the manpower ministry said on its website. Some companies in the island state will receive up to S$15,000 for each local hire under 40 years old and S$30,000 for those older, according to the announcement. The government will pay 25% of the first S$5,000 of these under-40 employees’ monthly salaries for a year and 50% for those over that age, it said. To qualify, companies need to increase their number of local employees over the next six months, particularly in jobs that pay at least S$1,400 a month. The rule applies to firms that were established on or before Aug. 16." sg.finance.yahoo.com/news/singapore-firms-get-s-1-billion-incentive-to-hire-more-locals-053154329.html
