Already sick for a longer time passed away from cancer to the throat. "Eddie Van Halen, grinning guitar god for a rock generation, dies at 65 With a road-battered guitar, lightning-quick fingers and a welcoming good-time grin, Eddie Van Halen and his band Van Halen may have been just what the 1970s needed. Amid a sea of aging ’60s rock acts and forgettable radio fare, Van Halen brought a refreshing jolt of energy to the stage with his hard-rock hooks and wild guitar flash in the Jimi Hendrix tradition. By the time the decade had come to a close, he’d become as influential as any guitarist who came before. “Ed's a once- or twice-in-a-century kind of guy. There's Hendrix, and there's Eddie Van Halen,” friend and guitarist Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains said earlier this year. “Those two guys tilted the world on its axis.”" news.yahoo.com/eddie-van-halen-grinning-guitar-193921730.html

Cant agree with the author, usual throw away cliches and platitudes. Then again I am a brit not some surfer dude from Kalifornia.
That being said, way too young to die from such a horrific death.

I was a big fan of Van Halen, way back when and I knew that Eddie was revered as a guitar god. But I never realized just how much so until I saw his obituaries and the accompanying write ups in almost every single newspaper worldwide and messages about just how great he was coming from almost anyone of note from that period. One such tribute saw him proclaimed as the Mozart equivalent of his generation and listed all the guitar patents he had taken out, the man was truly remarkable.
This wont be everyone's cup of tea and I can imagine at least one of our illustrious group groaning at the prospect, but this is typical Van Halen, if you appreciate such things....as I do. What is unique about this is Eddie was the person who "invented" tapping the neck, this in contrast to traditional picking.

, I hear you CM, no denying the guy could play a geetar, I put him in the same category as, Steve Vai and Joe Satriani, all show and no go, they aint got soul. I prefer this stuff, no fancy licks or fretboard <intereferingwithyourself>. Wow, stonking stuff, this is what I am talking about. Never give up on the blues, the blues will never give up on you.

I saw a Sammy Hagar interview where he was explaining that they were on tour and Eddie was up the back of their chartered plane with all his teeth rotten out of his head and he was trying the smash the windows out at 35000 feet with a champagne bottle, and Sammy was "f*ck this lot I'm out of here", and quit upon landing. A lady friend posted on Facebook about a year ago "don't tell my husband, but I have a crush on Eddie Van Halen". I posted under it "don't tell my wife, but so do I" (joking of course). Actually I prefer his brother Alex on drums.

Who builds their own guitar for goodness sake: "The Frankenstrat, also known as the "Frankenstein", is a guitar created by Eddie Van Halen. Its name is a portmanteau of Frankenstein, the fictional doctor who combined body parts to create a monster, and the Fender Stratocaster, an electric guitar made by Fender. A copy of the Frankenstrat is housed in the National Museum of American History, part of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.[1] The Frankenstrat was Van Halen's attempt to combine the sound of a classic Gibson guitar with the physical attributes and tremolo bar functionality of a Fender Stratocaster. It was made from a Northern Ash Stratocaster body, with pickup routing which he modified to fit a Gibson PAF humbucking bridge pickup.[2] The guitar has a maple neck and fretboard, chrome hardware, and was painted with a black and white striped design until arriving at its final combination of red background with black and white stripes. It has six strings and a Floyd Rose tremolo". en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frankenstrat
