This piece in the Torygraph caught my eye and sets out the real problem with UK unemployment: "Visas for migrant fruit and vegetable pickers are to be increased to 30,000 next year amid fears that there will not be enough British workers to fill the jobs and meet the demand. the executive director of Migration Watch, said: "It's madness. As the lockdown proved, there are lots of people in the UK willing to do it if they are paid a decent wage and treated well. Tens of thousands of jobs will not be available to the rising number of UK jobless. Farmers reported a mixed experience of "Pick for Britain" the national campaign to recruit domestic workers. Initial data showed that out of 50,000 home-grown applicants, 6,000 opted for an interview but only 112 took up the offer of a role on a UK farm. There were some attempts in the summer to try to use furloughed people. But while they initially thought it was a lovely job to work in the field, as soon as they got into the bath with their aches and pains, that was the end of that. There is not the preparedness in local people to do it." www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2020/12/23/migrant-fruit-veg-picker-visas-trebled-30000/It reminded me of my attempts to find a plumber to install a new water heater at the flat in Lancaster last year, seven plumbers came to take a look at the job but nobody wanted to do it because there wasn't enough money in the job, plus it was a little bit tricky....I ended up doing it myself.

It's pretty obvious to me that state benefits for the unemployed are far too generous. Even in my own family, I have two nephews who have never worked a day in their lives, and are now in their late twenties, yet they still have money for mobile 'phones, big televisions, booze and drugs (lots of drugs)*.
In my opinion, state benefits to the workshy should be slashed, but backed by practical schemes to get people into the workforce, and affordable childcare.
* In contrast, my third nephew has worked constantly since leaving school, as a care assistant in a nursing home. Long hours for very little pay, irregular and antisocial shifts, and virtually no job prospects. I admire his work ethic, but if I were he, I'd be inclined to ask whether I wouldn't have a better quality of life on benefits.

The kids that pack my groceries are six figures in debt. I asked them if the tertiary institutions offer any career guidance. Nope, they just want their money. Criminal. My 10 year old watches me trundle off to work at all hours whilst his cousins lie in till midday then play computer games till midnight. They've got 2 cars and a motorbike, and all the other bling.

One day you'll get promoted oldie and be allowed to clean the sinks....then just before retirement when you are bent and wizened you'll be the supervisor...and can sit on a chair outside smoking. That's if you can afford them by then of course...aren't they about $100 a pack now in Oz?

If smoking and guns both kill, why do only cigarettes come with warning labels?
And you have to be 18 before you can buy a gun in the USA but 21 before you can buy cigarettes, what's wrong with that picture I ask myself!

Anyone can put a fag in his or her mouth but you need some time to practice with a gun. So by the time you've mastered your piece you can start putting a fag in the corner of your mouth and believably say "anyone who even thinks of taking my fag away gets it!"

Anyone can put a fag in his or her mouth If only it were that easy. You have to get straight guys really drunk before they'll blow another man.

Just trying to blend in with the furniture before disappearing into thin air.
