While you're here rgs, in your capacity of linguistics officer can you clarify aroi/aloi pronunciation please.
Is the difference due to social class or regional speech.? Been wondering for a while.

I thought the article was OK, if a little basic until I got to:
"you can try fresh Thai spring rolls"
Pretty sure there's no such thing. They're Vietnamese.
Then
"Curry usually isn't the most exciting thing on a Thai menu."
and
"Curry ... served over rice, lentils, or vegetables."
Not sure I'd say "served over". Pretty much invariably it's served separately, or on the side of the dish. However "over lentils"? WTF?

Over on another forum, some self proclaimed foodie expert was proclaiming pat thai wasnt authentic unless it was served with ketchup, ffs. Best of luck being served isaan peasant food, eg luk chin in a restaurant in bkk, dont even bother asking for naem. No mention of southern food.

Please excuse my flippant remark, its not true, those from sth Isaan, eg buriram, surin etc can pronounce an r, probably because their first language is khmer, the further nth you go, the native langauge is laos. I know guys with isaan wives who are unable to communicate with each other in their native tongue, they have to speak central thai.

Check out your local pizza hut etc, the Thais love the stuff.

Lets not forget that Kalifornia and Florida are the only places on earth to sell authentic Thai food.

, pat thai, that authentic thai food But then, what is authentic thai food? Anything stir fried or deep fried is not authentic. The Siamese didn't have the technology for metal pans. That came with the Chinese later. Anything with chillies is not authentic. They were introduced during the Ayutthaya period. Black pepper arrived a bit earlier. That takes away a very large part of the Thai culinary repertoire, leaving little more than grilled meat/fish and steamed rice.
