We ship quite a lot of boxes to Europe with Evergreen. Don't know if any of our containers are on that ship but we will definitely have quite a few in the traffic jam building up behind the block. We have a few customers with shipments on the way who are flapping already.

I asked one of my assistants, who is also our shipping clerk, if this would cause us problems. She looked at me with defeat in her face and said "It makes no difference, all shipments during the Covid period have been delayed". She does have a point.

Ah well I remember the days we sailed around Cape Horn.
First sighted by Sir Francis Drake in 1578, but named by two Dutch navigators who rounded it in 1616, after the birth place in Holland of one of them. The old sailing ship men called it "Cape Stiff". Traditionally, a sailor who had rounded the Horn was entitled to wear a gold loop earring—in the left ear, the one which had faced the Horn in a typical eastbound passage. It used to be said that completion of the journey round Cape Horn entitled an officer to sit in the wardroom with one foot on the table: to have gone round Cape Horn and the Cape of Good Hope entitled him to sit with both feet on the table (but nothing entitled him to spit to windward!)

I'm suggesting nothing, but rumour abound that some were marooned on small islands for certain 'hideous' crimes. Greetings, uncle rubl e son

Watching these giant ships motoring down the Suez from a distance in the early eighties, you couldn't see the canal. It literally looked like they were driving down the sand.

I wonder whose insurance will cover it. The pilot is in charge while they are in the canal. Usually busy with his hand out for more packs of ciggies, not sure about the Scotch.

While some already divert ships to round the Cape (of Good Hope), Suez Canal head warns stricken cargo ship may need unloading.
As the ship is stuck in 'the middle of nowhere' cranes which can reach the containers stacked 50 meters high have to be transported ... through the canal. Later today two heavy tugboats will arrive which may help together with the dredging.
