The irony of it. "Britain could move nuclear submarines to France if Scotland backs independence Britain's nuclear weapons could be moved to France in the event of Scottish independence, Ministry of Defence contingency plans reveal. Another option is for the UK to seek a long-term lease for Trident at its bases in Faslane and Coulport, enabling a British territory within the borders of Scotland, those familiar with the plans say." www.yahoo.com/news/britain-could-move-nuclear-submarines-211117160.htmlPS original on theTelegraph site behind a paywall

Why not move them to the Gulf of Thailand? I understand there's a real need for submarines there.

^^^ The Gulf of Thailand is 800 km long. I'm pretty sure submarines are a bit shorter than that. Its average depth if 58 m, and a Dreadnought's draft is a mere 12 m. You could easily fit hundreds of them in the Gulf. No problem.

Whenever the issue of submarines for the Thai Navy comes up it's said that the Gulf of Thailand is too shallow to allows subs to move around freely. The Thai sub on order is an S26T, based on the Type 039B Yuan-class submarine operated by the Chinese Navy. It's 77.6m by 8.4m with draught unknown (to me). If this sub is already considered too large you might as well forget to introduce the Vanguard class here. That is unless you want to park them next to the aircraft carrier.

But the military geniuses of the Thai armed forces have determined it's not too large, and so have ordered several of them. As you suggest, however, they may end up parked next to the aircraft carrier, with the airship floating above (assuming they can actually inflate it). They could decorate its decks with the novelty golf ball detectors the army spent so much on.

Amusing that the English assume we would allow them to fook around with nuclear weapons on our soil for any amount of money.
You will be booted out and charged in the European court for your abuse of our land and the increased deformity rates in these areas.

Rumour has it France has no space to store British subs. It's more that recent developments suggest they may have a few non-nuclears they'd be willing to sell for a decent 'amongst friends' price.
