Did anyone spot this? A mod across the road posts a thread entitled Banking Crisis and explains how a long standing friend had his account drained of 500k over 14 days via a series of small and overseas transactions. A few of the less dimwitted observers, and there aren't that many, spotted that 500k over 14 days is 29 baht per minute which nobody at the bank spotted and no SMS's were sent to the account holder. He goes on to say that when his friend protested to the bank and demanded his money back the police were called and he was thrown in jail for defamation. This is real Walter Mitty stuff, if credibility was money this man is bankrupt. But you have to love it towards the end, after his credibility has been challenged several times, he plays the, I am a Moderator card, as if only they are as pure as driven snow.......reminds me of bodies in oil drums in basements. I guess the site must be short of content to invent such stuff, either that or the effect of the pills is wearing off. aseannow.com/topic/1239419-banking-crisis/

Hadn't seen it. I presume either the poster is lying, or the friend was making a sob story to try and cadge a loan.

My own banking story of the year concerns the need for my bank to continually see my passport, even when I want to do simple things. Last month I went to a new small branch of my bank in a shopping mall, simply because it was convenient and close. I wanted to update a passbook and the teller side he wanted to see my passport. When I asked why he said the rules require him to ensure I have a valid visa.....this was red flag to a bull time. I explained that the bank plays no role in my relationship with Immigration and the banks rules don't require him to inspect my visa. After some public and increasingly loud discussion, he updated the passbook.
Next was my own branch, this week, the branch where we're all on first-name terms and we've known each other for a decade. I try to order a bank letter for Immigration so I can renew my visa at Immigration, they ask to inspect my passport and my visa. We have a debate similar to before about their role et al, all of which ends up with us falling out and me telling them I will close my account and storming out. I'd even offered a copy of my passport on my phone or to bring it into the branch when I picked up the letter the following week....nope, need to see the visa now or we can't do anything. At another branch later in the day I get my letter ordered without any passport or visa inspection request.
I've written to the CEO of the bank and asked him what bank policy is, two branches making the same request is making me nervous. I've asked if the bank has become an agent of Immigration, stay tuned for his reply which I will post. BTW he's Singaporean so this may hit a nerve.

I've seen some Thai info from friends and Police website that there have been cases where people lost money via 'regular' small payments. Forgot the details, think it was with less than 50 Baht deductions. For some here that may sound minor but for some people that can be a disaster till the end of the month.

Yes, there has been lots of press coverage of those withdrawals which is even more reason the banks should be on the lookout for suspicious transactions, 500,000 of small transaction withdrawals seems suspicious to me.

I remember seeing something along those lines not sure the amount was the same. There had apparently been multiple similar problems, though nothing of that magnitude, just at two banks. Asean said the govt had ordered an investigation and people were being refunded.

Back to health insurance. Guess what, I bought the policy! But not before securing a 19% discount on the annual cost (10% offered plus a further 9% requested....I think it's a real mistake to let customers know you're willing to negotiate the price). That at least gives me some coverage for a year, lets me get in and out of Thailand and buys me time to see what other better options exist. Oh yes, I also secured an adjustment on the deductible, it's now 320k deductible then a 30% co-pay on the next 180k.
