Both Sides Paused Daily So A Groundskeeper Could Feed His Ducks
On April 24, 1916, the Monday after Easter Sunday, Irish revolutionaries launched a military uprising that attempted to free the country from British rule. Dublin was the stage for much of the fighting, and the streets turned into battlefields. As a result, parts of the city were severely damaged.
Some of the skirmishes happened in St. Stephen's Green, a city park. Although the Irish Citizen Army had captured the park, they soon found themselves surrounded by the British.
Both sides agreed to a temporary daily ceasefire for a surprising reason - James Kearney, the park's keeper, needed to feed the resident ducks. So every day, the British and Irish paused their conflict long enough for Kearney to bring his avian charges their quack snacks.
