Epson changing the game "Epson’s new move is a sly one. Rather than compete on price, the printer maker is dropping the cartridge issue entirely. When you buy an EcoTank printer—for instance, the ET-2550, which closely resembles Epson’s XP-420—you fill up its four-chambered reservoir with ink from plastic containers included with the printer. There’s a satisfying feeling of dumping all of that ink into the tubs. You then let the printer prime itself and your ink worries are over. Fast forward two very print-productive years. You and your family have churned out more than 35 black-and-white and 60 color pages every week. Finally, you need more ink. Epson will sell you a whole set of replacement canisters for $52. That same amount of Epson ink, in XL cartridges, would cost more than 10 times as much. The old model is out the window. Epson’s not trying to make money on ink this time around, because it’s charging you up front for the printer. The ET-2550 costs $400; its big brother, the ET-4550, which has a fax, a sheet feeder and Ethernet, costs $500." www.wsj.com/articles/review-epson-kills-the-printer-ink-cartridge-1438683871

have noticed also in Thailand that there are print shops in places link Central where people have hooked up ink tanks outside the printers. Thai copying again. Not sure how good these are for your printer long term

Anything that saves money is always welcome in our house. $52 though - I could feed a family of 8 for a month on that.
Cheapest printers are always someone elses. Work is a good place to print. As are good neighbors if you come up with a good story as to why you have a pressing need to print and your printer has just stopped. Make sure you vary your stories and neighbors. Also best to not let them see what you are printing. Say it is personal or confidential.

Not sure how good these are for your printer long term They are a great solution As long as you print a page or two every week (colour) as you need to do really with all inkjet printers to keep the heads clear you will have no trouble. 100baht buys a bottle of ink which will fill one colour twice. (about the same as 50 cartridges) so 400 baht for a set. Inkjet cartridges rely on a lot of super fine holes for the nozzle. That is plastic in these printers so eventually gets worn larger and printing loses some sharpness. You may have to buy a new cartridge every couple of years. All the real works of a printer are in the cartidge so the actual printer will not get damaged at all. If you need warantee service of course you will just have to put another printer cartridge in.

I've used ink tanks for around 7 years now, quality good and long lasting, cost minimal and I print a lot of stuff at home and at work.

Not sure how good these are for your printer long term Define 'long term'. I guess it all depends on - personal or professional printer - type of 'device' you print from - 'shared' printer - frequency of printing - environment printer is put in (temperature, humidity, etc., etc.) Some people I know buy a nice, new mobile phone twice a year, but struggle with a 2000 Baht printer. cdn.randomfunnypicture.com/wp2/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/mouse-jam-paper-printer1.jpg

I'm using a Brother DCP J 125 with a so called ink monster tank for many years and never had a problem with it.
At school a very similar printer, Brother DCP J 100. But the printer head died after 15 months. They replaced it for 2,400 baht at an Advice shop and the quality of the copies are shit.
But I'd never go back to intern tanks and refill them. Was there, done it.
