This is about a Thai family we know. It's not just Farangs who get ripped off. Some friends paid 100,000 in cash and another 100,000 in gold. Quite a few in the village went over to Chumpon, about 100 km round trip. Had the party etc. They came home and left the son there. Not suspecting a thing. Son was home 2 days later. They kicked him out, but kept the 200k. He's now joined the army as a volunteer, and also volunteered foe the deep South. Don't know if it's a death wish or because on both counts it's more money. Sopha's nephew got lucky at the conscription meeting. His trigger finger doesn't work.

Ouch, that's a fair chunk of change really. Feel for the lad that he's gone through that and now signed up to go into an area that isn't the safest. Good and bad everywhere sadly, not just limited to Thais

It didn't take long to get a sin sot thread going. This will be the first 200 page thread here.  The poor Thai. If he had enough money to build the woman a 10 mil baht house he could have stuck around. He doesn't know how to play the long game. |

Bloody glad I've got daughters. I'm afraid my Westernism kicks in and any money will be going to the newly weds and if the boys family are poor no chance would any money be going anywhere.
I really hate this aspect of the "culture".
Money, money, money. As my old Swedish mate Peter says "They only think for money!"
Apologies if that sounds ignorant and harsh, it's just the way I see it.

Anyone dumb enough to marry a Thai to marry any woman should know he's going to get ripped off. It's just a matter of time. Maybe this guy is lucky in that he got out fast without suffering further abuse.
The late Johnny Carson, former host of The Tonight Show, said on the air after about this 4th expensive divorce: "Why get married? Just find a woman you hate and buy her a house."
