Just wondering if anyone out here ever used open source software to port a program or tool to a specific O.S.
I've done so myself with Apache, Samba, OpenSSL, openSSH, gzip, zip/unzip, bzip, md5 and some other stuff. Interesting was getting some to work on SCO UNIX 3.2V4.2. That's an O.S. from a few generations ago.
Of course lots of people may use open source programs in 'ready to use' provided format.

Not really sure what you're asking here. Do you mean "take the source code of a program and compile it under a different operating system"?
